What if Delta...

bought a company with -900's? Pinnacle owns their own, I believe, and if Delta were to buy them wouldn't Delta be breaking it's 76 seat clause?

Someone was rumor mongering and before I slap it down, I wanted to ask some of the knowledgeable pilots out there.

Plus I hate any rumor I didn't start.

Doesn't DL own Mesaba?

The PCL 900's are already included in the 76 seat count.

those 900's are already flown for delta though.

I can tell you I have heard NOTHING about pinnacle being bought. That being said it is a HUGE black hole from our TA that wasn't addressed. The number of 70+ seats in the DL network (to a max of 76 per DL scope) is counted from ALL carriers regardless of wholly owned, private, or publicly traded.

I dont see how that is even an issue? If pinnacle was bought they would be thrown in the same pot as comair, mesaba, and compass.

Yep. Delta scope on the 76 seaters is TOTAL number. Doesn't state who it's flown by or whatever. Heck, Delta could start their own regional with mainline seniority pilots, and it still wouldn't change the number unless they gave up more scope at the mainline contract level.

If Pinnacle were to be bought be Delta (which is a huge doubt in my mind, who'd want it?), those 76 seaters wouldn't be ADDITIONAL ones since they are already counted in the 76 seaters being operated for Delta. Doesn't matter who owns them, it's how many are operated.

Delta's trying to sell the regionals they own, why would they want to buy another one? You don't have to own the cow to get the benefit of it's milk.

OK got ya.

So it wouldn't be disadvantageous to buy Pinnacle for the scope then.

I agree wholeheartedly, but I've learned to just expect Delta to do the opposite of what makes sense on the regional level.

Anyway, I'll put the rumor under a "possible", but who knows. Just some HR lady on my block.

Take it easy all. Thanks for the help Kell, Buzo and Higney, you actually managed to read the question and answer, thank you much.

Why would they buy them?? To void the contract and park 200's like we all know they want to do. I haven't even attempted to crunch the numbers but it may be cheaper for them to buy ANY contract regional and park or return planes and furlough the pilots instead of continuing to pay them the contracted rates. Who knows, but I agree they will do the opposite of common sense.

Shouldn't you be putting on a favorite Brady jersey?

Let me ask you something, if you leased a car and then said, I dont want this anymore, im going to return it. Do you think the car dealer would just take it back? Pinnacle has the youngest fleet of 200's and most of them will be flying till 2017 at least.

You never know what kind of deal they can make with the leases; maybe trade 200's for 700's which would fit in the scope language. My point is, once they own you...well they own you(figuratively) and can do what they want with you. I think its a power that they would want to have. That being said I don't think Delta will buy Pinnacle, I'm sure it would be a lot of money to spend and a bad investment. They want to park 100 50 seaters in the next 2-3 years so plan on it sooner than later....

There already is a 1:1 in the ASA to swap out 200's for 70/70+ seaters. Buying us doesn't necessarily void the contract on -200's. I would have to look at the fine print but it wouldn't seem financially positive to buy a regional (at least not pinnacle). NW has bought regionals that were on their last leg (mostly by their doing) and built them for an IPO- look at Pinnacle (was Express 1). Bought em at the bottom, built them up with 200's and got rid of the saabs- then sold them for a nice profit and got rid of the financial burden. I am not a fortune teller or have any "inside knowledge" but it appears NW is/was doing the same thing with Mesaba and Compass. Time will tell but there is no reason or scenario I can think of that would justify the purchase of pinnacle.
