Am I the only one...

...that does not like crossing the hold short line until hearing the words "...cleared for takeoff..." or "...position and hold..." in the clearance? I swear, the guys I fly with are just trying to get violated for crossing the line only to be told "ah disregard, Hold short traffic's now on final". Crossing the line that 3 seconds sooner doesn't change our fuel burns or on time "performance" that much...or our pay checks at all. Sheesh.

Really? This is your problem?

Listen, I can put up with the crap in the regional forums, I can put up with the crap spread everywhere else, but you have 2 choices my friend. Grow some sack and say, "hey, we aren't cleared across those yet" or you just roll with it, which seems to be the path you've chosen.

Either grow a pair, or quit complaining. Damn dude, i've been a lurker for a long time, poster for a bit, but really? Do you have breaks on your side as well? Test 'em, I'm pretty sure it's on the "before taxi/taxi checklist".

Touchy today?

Are you perhaps referring to brakes instead of breaks? Don't know which airline you fly for, but the last time I did a brake test was as a CFI. Never seen it since on the 6 different airline type airplanes I've flown.

Now, if you mean breaks, I like taking second break. It breaks the flight up nicely because by then you are in the tracks and it's boring flying there. Added bonus, you are just really waking up for the last part of the flight.

Of course, YMMV.

Kurtis Blow taught me the breaks a while ago!!

Brakes on a bus, brakes on a car,
Breaks to make you a superstar,
Breaks to win and breaks to lose,
But these here breaks will rock your shoes,
And these are the breaks,
Break it up, break it up, break it up!

If your woman steps out with another man,
(That's the breaks, that's the breaks)
And she runs off with him to Japan,
(That's the breaks, that's the breaks)
And the IRS says they want to chat,
(That's the breaks, that's the breaks)
And you can't explain why you claimed your cat,
(That's the breaks, that's the breaks)
And Ma Bell sends you a whopping bill
(That's the breaks, that's the breaks)
With eighteen phone calls to Brazil,
(That's the breaks, that's the breaks)
And you borrowed money from the mob,
(That's the breaks, that's the breaks)
And yesterday you lost your job,
(That's the breaks, that's the breaks)
Well, these are the breaks,
Break it up, break it up, break it up!

Or you could just continue lurking and move onto the next thread....:dunno:

Cross the hold short line without a clearance at your own peril.

A runway incursion, at best, will probably end your career. A runway incursino, at worst, will kill lots of people.

I wonder if the pilots you mention even realize what they are doing. Perhaps their actions are a Pavlovian response formed by continuous repetition and anticipation of what is coming next. Stay sharp and voice your concerns; they should be grateful for your attention to detail. We must all be on guard to complacency.

I am not a huge fan of position and hold clearances either. Remember that 90 seconds to query the controller.... oh yeah, I've seen 90 seconds in position a ton.... althought when you're waiting for a heavy, you want to give it at least 2 minutes/5 miles.

Don't like it at all, and of course, those who don't like strobes ON while on the runway but still don't like it either.... but they can pound sand if they're behind me because it's my runway.

Exactly!!!

Who the hell does this? What would be the benefit? I see no reason, at all, to do that.
Double exactly!!! So I gained 2 seconds crossing the line? I still have to finish the checklist, which doesn't get started until I'm done talking on the radio. Net gain = 0.

I don't understand it. I noticed it on this last leg though, as soon as "N12345, Anytown tower..." those power levers are moving forward. Weird. I always wait until I hear that I'm cleared and normally I wait until the readback is done and we can get moving on the checklist.

I just don't understand it. Glad I'm not the only one.

Seriously?

As far as crossing the line or even powering up before hearing the magic words, not a good idea.

Yeah.... no brake test on our checklist either. Just verify the proper thickness outside during the preflight, and make sure we've got hydraulic pressure according to the HYD page.

That surprises me. Delta does not do that? We do them at Chautauqua. The Captain does theirs usually right out of the blocks and the FO usually checks theirs when flaps 9 is selected. I think we did them at Skyway and I know it's done in the military.

No brake check at XJT either...same plane as you guys fly.
