And so it begins... XJT stole SKYW's flying

It's about time for my obligatory complaints about moderation and censorship. It's been at least a month or so since my last rant. :)

I was having a conversation with my youngest stepson last night. He turns twenty one in a couple of weeks, and part of the conversation was about how much he's matured over the years. We laughed about one of his techniques years ago where he would say something offensive or nasty or mean, then add "...just kidding" at the end, thinking he could get away with doing something bad without consequences.

He learned the fallacy of that approach at around age twelve.

Yeah, this guy comes one here and posts flame bait in a "civil" manner and it's okay. People that point it out with a little "incivility" are the ones that are admonished because they let their emotions show a little in reaction to an underminded attempt to discredit a pilot group. I see how it is here. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I want to disparage a group of people.

Here's how it goes:

"Pip Pip, Cheerio. Just the other day I was flying back from my hometown of Staines, England. I came across these three young chaps speaking about the newly acquired flying of Express Jet. Well these blokes were less than savory in their speaking of Express Jet. In fact, one could interpret them as to harbor HATRED towards the Express Jet pilots. That is all. Pip pip, good day sir!"

Mature.

I'm making a point. That's essentially what he did. Whether he was nice about doesn't negate the fact that his story is completely farcical . . . just like mine.

Well played.

That said, most of us have come to expect the same from merit. We just brush it aside as trolling now though.

Oh oh, let me guess, was that Iain pretending to be a Brit again? That wacky packi.

I'm not on here enough to know who's a trolling tool and who's not. Sorry about that. It just rubbed me the wrong way when I read that ESPECIALLY since these boards tend to be less riddled with flame bait and tools trolling around.

I'm on here way too much, and even so I'm often not up on what is flamebait and what is not. I'm not an airline pilot and really don't care all that much about that side of the industry, so I certainly don't keep track of who works for which regional or who has a grudge against who. Also I am basically clueless when it comes to regional (or even major) airline rumors, so knowing when someone is trolling versus giving good information sometimes goes right over my head. But again, the point for me as a moderator is not necessarily to discern who has good info and who has bad, but to help set the tone that Doug wants on his site. With the right tone/vibe in place the good info tends to rise to the top and the bad stuff gets dis-proven. Hopefully the vibe keeps the good info guys around to post more.

We tend to have fewer trolls and flamebait because we discourage the kind of behavior that they thrive on. If they don't get the reaction that they want they tend to go elsewhere.

Anyway, it's all good. My original response to you: "Easy there sunshine..." was just intended to get you to slow your roll a little. That led into a discussion about how and why we moderate the site like we do, and that's probably a good thing for all of us (moderators and users alike) to review on occasion. Keeps things clear for everyone. Well, almost everyone...there will always be some that don't get it.

:D

This part of the forum is the proverbial "south central" of JC. The constant arguing and bickering. The most patrolled neighborhood around here.

Should just rename the forum then.

You've mentioned this quite a number of times already. We get it MikeD.

That said, I'm sorry you don't see the good that comes from this forum. I know when I'm only out looking for the bad I ignore the positive qualities.

You may see it, but you guys definite don't get it, and worse, fail to change it. You're only seeing my subtle hint as just a complaint, not the constructive criticism that it is..

I try to see both sides. But make a comparison between this part of the forum and other forum sections, and there's a definite difference. The complaining and anger here are far more rampant. If you don't see that, well....I don't know what to tell you.

Oh, so it's constructive criticism. I see now.

Boss, I'm sorry you don't like the tone of the conversation in these parts - but if it's so disastrously bad I'm sure the owner of this here operation would hand out cards and essentially silence the troublemakers.

I have yet to see that though.

Sorry it's not all gum drops and fairy tales in the airline world these days. Times are tough and a lot of us have a great deal of concerns that someone not currently employed in this segment just might not really understand.

I don't dare relate to those freight dawg rough riders and their lifestyles, but I know when they're going through some tough times - the last thing I do is tell them to stop complaining. Instead I offer my sincere and heartfelt "go get em" while they fight the Man and protect their careers and lifestyles.

Contrary to what you may believe, we don't hand out cards for what people think, we hand them out for how they come across or what they say if it violates the forum rules. This isn't about thought police. So that's an entirely moot point there.

And no it's not all gum drops and fairy tales, I know that. That's not even the point. The big point is the anger and angst displayed amongst members to each other here, especially if there's disagreement on some point about something airline related, usually in the union/non-union department, jumpseat-wars department, etc et al. Sure, they can be contentious debates, but it really goes overboard here sometimes. But hey, thats me.

Yes. It's a vast conspiracy that those that don't respect my rules are given infractions.

I don't care if you're writing a six megabyte missive about how cool you think I am, you are expected to follow the guidelines of the website.

How can I make this any clearer because I keep saying 2 + 2 = 4 and some of you guys keep coming up with 2.71x10^13

(it's not rocket science, man)
