Which Camera?

A D40 can use the same lenses that a D3000 can. Neither has an internal focus motor.
.

you're correct. i was thinking they changed the 3000, but obviously it isn't until the 5000.

Sigma would be the only brand of glass that i'd replace my Nikkors (Nikon) with... But they're more expensive then the Nikkors for the most part.

the bigma is no where near as expensive as a nikon lens with similar throw, granted it only goes to f4, and the auto focus isn't that fast.

I went with a Sony A200. It was cheaper than a D40, 10mp, more af points, and in body stabilization. Love it with the 75-300mm lense and you can use old Minolta lenses on it.

id gladly take a average body with nice glass than a cadillac body with garbage glass.

True, but nearly every Nikkor and Canon lens is pretty good. And the average person isn't going to carry around a bag of lenses. The 18-200 VR Nikon will do just about everything a normal person needs in one lens, and will work with every nikon DSLR. Get that, and then whatever body you can afford. D40 would be my choice. Yes, I do realize I'm saying to buy a $650 lens for a $300 camera.

The D40 and D60 come with the 18-55 VR lens. You can buy the 55-200 for about $200 or less. That's what I have. It would be nice to have 18-200, but the 18-55, 55-200 combo works for me.

If you don't mind carrying an extra lens, that works fine. I personally use a 50 f/1.4 90% of the time. The 35 DX is great if you can find one too.
