Plate Ice?

Are you referring to the hexagonal plate ice crystals used for aerosol particle scavenging?

If not, where did you see plate ice?

Went to an AOPA seminar last night talking about accidents, and the guy mentioned (at least I thought I heard him say) 'Plate Ice' that formed on the airplane. The scenario was the plane is icing up, he is increasing angle of attack due to increase weight and decrease in lift, and that since the underside of the wing is exposed more due to the higher angle of attack, and said (or I heard) that resulted in the formation of 'plate ice'. I was thinking huh?? Plate ice? orly??
 
Hmmm... Well I wonder if he was getting very technical with his discussion about how ice forms and brought up the crystal structures etc...

Best guess, freezing rain? Departed DCA several years ago in a Falcon 20 in moderate freezing rain. We did it right, knew it was coming, Filled the plane with fuel the night before and put in a heated hangar. Waited until the pax showed then called for taxi while still in the hangar. Ground said we were first for TO because everyone else were in deice. We taxied out and had a short wait for a plane landing. It was amazing the ice we picked up climbing out, clear above 4000. Glad I was not in a plane with boots! AA slid an MD80 off the runway an hour after we departed.
