New Headset -- ANR

I think any of the better companies offer excellent warranty service. I actually got my HMEC460 for free when I sent in my HMEC400 under warranty, and was told that the 400 was no longer supported, and they just gave me a 460.

If you are a music guy, I would absolutely pick the Sennheiser, or give the Beyerdynamic a try.

See, this is what I'm looking for! Patrick, were they quick and easy to deal with on the replacement? It seems that all of the new 'high tech' headsets are unreliable!

I hadn't heard about the reliability of the Z's Truck, good to know.

Currently I've been sending my Softcomm 100's back every 12-18 months for the last 8 years. It costs $9 in shipping and they've since upgraded it to a 300 and replaced it completely once with no questions asked. They've been good to me but at 19oz I'm starting to think about something lighter!

Truck, I'm pretty sure the TSO thing isn't much of a concern for me. My employer (me) hasn't required any such monkey business. ;)
 
I've had Bose for 7 years and -- although I love them -- I agree that they're not fantastic in any jet that has either excessive wind-noise, or leaky door/window seals etc.

High frequency noise slips right through unfortunately.

In the winter they're comfortable and light. In the summer, they'll make you sweat like nobody's business. And in the Learjet I bump my head constantly with them.

I'm pondering a clarity-aloft or similar. Haven't decided yet.

Telex 850 ANR's work well in the 60. I am 6' and have not had problems with clearance with them. They're light and comfy, and have decent ANR; no major complaints. Plus, no battery required!!

Of course, they don't have music or cell phone hook up so they won't help the OP!!:dunno:

I played one website off another since one of them said that they would match and then beat any price by 10%.

For example, these guys list he qfrxcc as $299, but then have this to say:

I have been using mine for almost a year now, and i just discovered how to make them even lighter when i noticed that the extra padding on the top could be unzipped and left in the flight bag....and it's still just as comfy (in my opinion)

It's pretty much ATC SOP in this neck of the woods. They won't release you unless you're #1 holding short of the runway. Most of the time, it's within a few minutes of calling, but sometimes it can be 15-20.

I tried out a co-worker's Zulus this week. Not that impressive for the price tag. The ANR works well if you never move your head. Once I started turning my head to look for traffic, the seal broke and would interfere with the ANR. My David Clark 13.4 with Headsets, Inc. ANR were much better. They weren't much more comfortable, either.
 
What I dont like about the Zulu's

- Mic is to short, It comes to the side of your mouth instead of in front of it, harder to pick up my voice.

- turn your head to look out the window and it lets in sound. it leaks whenever you turn your head.

- Tap your headset in flight or bump it on the ceiling or wall and it almost sends a shock wave to your ear. I dont know what this is or how it does it but it really annoys me.

- Cant lean your head (headset) on the wall of the airplane, it makes a huge rattle in your head (keeps you from sleeping)

- When listening to music, the quality does not quite match the Bose, especially the Bass

- quality of construction and customer support is a little weak. (everyone I know that had one, had something go wrong and had to send it back)

What I like about them:

- Fits nice around the ears, and comfortable

- Cheaper

- Bluetooth compatible
 
Aside from having my HMEC400 replaced by a HMEC460 after 2 years of use, no complaints at all about Sennheiser service. I was without a headset for two days while I got my replacement.

I have heard of good service on the Zulu, but again, it seems that everyone I have talked to has needed that service.

If you're looking to save some money, you may try the new HMEC250. I think it's around $500.
