Cockpit Chatter

Some of my former instructors were captains at GLA. I've seen cell phone videos and pics that are pretty funny. I know a lot of this takes place throughout the industry, unfortunately some of it's done at the wrong time. BTW, I know the guy who was making the chicken noises, doesn't surprise me.

• Pilots on a Great Lakes Airlines flight into St. Louis were making chicken noises and talking in character as they taxied on Sept. 7, 2008. The plane suffered substantial damage to the tail when it struck a building, but the four passengers were not injured.

4 pax?

...on a 1900?

Srsly?

Eh, nevermind. The boss-man and I were alone on a Crash-8 a few months ago. So I guess I've seen stranger things.

I had a flight on SW from San Jose to KC a few months back with a stop at LAX. Out of San Jose the flight was completely full. Pulled up to the gate at LAX, almost all passengers got off. At push back (same plane) there were a little over a dozen people on the flight. Just a little bit of a waste.

When I was in Page it was pretty common that GLA arrived with 4 pax or less. Of those there might be one or two non-revs. Two would deplane, no one or maybe one would board. Some flights had zero deplanements, one boarding. At least once that I can remember there were zero pax on arrival and no boardings.

This thread went in the completely opposite direction I was going for, but anyways....

I've seen Great Lakes to that crap in a Brasilia. You really start to wonder what's going on when you see that.

Ok then...back on track. It aint popular to say and it will ruffle a lot of feathers here.

You put 20 somethings in both seats and what do you expect? Top it off with stupidly low wages....

The insurance company actuaries know a thing or two about this.

The lack of professionalism at GLA is embarrassing, however I don't think you can blame this on putting two 20 somethings in the cockpit together. The incredibly low wages definitely play a factor along with horribly inept management that treats us more horribly than most of you can possibly imagine. As for the sterile cockpit rules, well, Sully broke sterile on the Hudson flight and that flight only lasted a minute or two before it became an emergency. I'm not saying I'm against the sterile rules, but it seems to me that the media and congress are focusing on it and ignoring other important factors.

I saw that on the front page of USA today when I was at work. I'm glad everybody got to read that before they got on their flights today. Me thinks the media must not like pilots all that much.

Yes, but especially USA Today. Why were you reading that fishrap? That deserves a cuff to the head.
But pilots are their biggest audience.

I didn't read it, I just saw it on the front page sitting around on all the seats in the gate area where people left it behind.

What is the point of this thread? Honestly?

What's the point of this post? Honestly?

How is this thread any different than 99% of the threads on here?

I just think it's rediculous that the media thinks pilots aren't allowed to joke, laugh, or enjoy anything. I know there are times for professionalism and a sterile cockpit, but I've heard stories about guys getting fired because they found out what they were talking about. It had nothing to do with the company either. I think management and media need to worry about paying the pilots more. Being poor and tired doesn't do a whole lot for morale.

It's not that the pilots were laughing and joking, it was when they were laughing and joking. I've been known the laugh and joke with the best of 'em, but there's an appropriate time to do so.

Exactly, but this article seems like it's just trying to break down pilots even more. They have a good point on some stuff, but I don't think articles like this should be written by people who have absolutely no clue about flying and read by people who have absolutely no clue about flying.

I do agree 100% that there are times for a sterile cockpit, and unfortunately not everyone follows the rules.

I would guess that 97% of airline pilots break the sterile "rule" in some way or another. Either talking, drinking, eating, or reading.

Personally I think it's an outdated rule. In reality what does it accomplish? Maybe a more realistic altitude (say 5000') would allow for more compliance.

Sterile cockpits? HA! What harm ever comes from breaking the sterile cockpit rule.

Maybe they'd hear the horn better.
