Flying in the rain

If you fly a small airplane through rain, you will most certianly die a horrible death! The engine will blow up, the wings will fall off, and you will be a smokin hole in the ground, for sure......or so I've heard.

well, caveat emptor, if you went to a pt 61 school, the aircraft should be fine should you choose to use aerodynamic braking.... but if you went to a pt 141 school, most definitely the engine will throw a rod and the wheels will retract instantaneously if you try to use that aerodynamic braking!!

Reminds me when I was XC timebuilding. PF left seat was playing with his right hand floating out the window(130 kts, Seminole), while flying with the left. Me being the funny guy I was, gently pushed his arm out the window. Scared the crap out of him. Had a great old laugh, so did he, but I spent the next 30 min getting talked to how close his hand was to the prop, which on a Seminole is like 3 feet away, he would have to have a very long forearm.

Almost like the CFI we had who would yell traffic and point in a particular direction to a new student flying. He would yell louder, asking if he was gonna do anything, do you see the traffic?! In reality there was no traffic, and usually the student would 1/2 freak out, and try to bank away from this imaginary traffic while intensely staring out the window to see it.

Reminds me of my old Air Force room mate (also a pilot), who loved to yell "CAR!", pointing out the window while we were driving. Pointing at nothing of course...
 
You all know why skydivers don't jump in the rain, right?



They'd hit the pointy ends of the rain drops on their way down.
 
Just had a nice flight last night through some heavy rain.

First time I ever went though the rain with an ANR headset, and man what an experience.

Sounded like I was being pelted by small arms fire for about 20 minutes.


Almost started having flashbacks! :eek:
