What if everyone retired tomorrow? Where would the social security come from? Don't be mad at the guy that worked his tail off, then got laid off. He contributed to his unemployment benefits, as did his employer. Be mad at the government for not storing the money properly. They bank on people NOT using those benefits. It's almost like some of the shoddy 401k things you see.
Perhaps you are missing the point. The point being that it is a crappy situation, and his comment was obviously a bit of hyperbole to look at the silver lining of a dark cloud. I would say the same thing myself, while I nearly kill myself looking for work.
