Taking Children to OKC

I'm going to be in OKC starting at the end of November for four months. I'm thinking of bringing my daughter down with me. She's an older toddler and I know I can find day care/assistance while down there.

What I want to know: Is there anyone out there that has been a single parent at the academy with their kid tagging along? How did it work for you?

I know I have a lot riding on this opportunity for the sake of my little family and want to make sure taking her is not a bad decision.

It's not a bad idea, but if you have to miss work for any reason it's going to be tough to catch up and get back on track.
With all the time outside of work with nothing to do, you'll probably regret it if you don't take her.
OKC, being as lame as it is, I think is more important to attend than facility training due the fact that the rest of the class doesn't stop if you choose to. If you miss too much training you'll most likely be forced to wait for another class to begin.
 
I would take her. They have day care that is on-site. You might want to call and verify it isn't full first though. Also you will most likely find that someone in your class brings their spouse and children. If your daughter were to get sick you might be able to use them for a back-up and you might be able to make some friends for play-dates as well. I would have TOTALLY helped anyone out that needed it in OKC while we were there. Hope it works out for you!!! Most people that don't have their family in OKC REALLY miss them and many regret not bringing them along!
 
I'm really glad this question was asked... I too am a single mom with a little boy who is five. If I am selected I dont have the luxury of choice to bring him or not so, are people at OKC just simply enrolling their kids for 4 months in school and thats it. Has anybody experienced transition issues???
I've got time to wonder and worry but I just thought i would ask.
 
My daughter was in school and the transition was GREAT. We LOVED her school in OKC...her teacher was amazing!

OKC has a couple different school districts. My daughter was at Coronado Heights in the Putnam City School District. Putnam City has pre-k that is half day and then all day kindergarten. School started at 8:00 but the school had a "working parents" group. You can drop your child off before school and pick them up after school is out. That would work GREAT for you as long as you are not on the night shift. Night shift you might have to check him out of school early and then put him in the on-site day care while working.

For students with children kim's place offers special family housing. Kim's place is within walking distance to school (mustang schools) in a gated addition where over 70 atc students live. These are all new houses fully furnished. Please call with questions and please see website at kbahavar.com

I don't regret not taking my family Oklahomo City with me but I sure did miss the hell out of them.
The FAA offers a subsidy program for daycare (Available at OKC?). Ask your local NATCA rep about it.
This job requires alot from you and your family.
Valuable family time is lost/missed each week by each and every controller (it's what I miss most) so they can continue to keep the flying public safe. It's what we get paid to do and we love it.
