Boy gets special ride to school -- in a helicopter; FAA alerted

Father was just trying to make the first day of school an occasion to remember for his son

CLERMONT

Bart Sutherin gets big points for trying to make his son's first day of school at East Ridge High a memorable one.

But it probably wasn't a good idea to rent a helicopter and then drop off the boy without first warning the Lake County school district and Sheriff's Office.

Sutherin freaked out school officials when he landed the blue-and-white Hughes 300 helicopter about 7 a.m. Monday behind some portable classrooms on the east side of the campus, according a Lake Sheriff's Office report.

A deputy assigned to work at the high school called the Federal Aviation Administration, which launched an investigation.

Although the FAA still is looking into the matter, an official said Sutherin likely isn't in trouble because he landed the aircraft safely and "in accordance with the Federal Aviation Regulations."

Sutherin, a registered pilot and father of three, told officials he had simply wanted to "make a positive impression on the other students."

His 14-year-old son Joseph, who started the ninth grade this week, said he thought it would be cool to arrive at school via aircraft. It's certainly something he won't forget, he said.

"It wasn't something everyone did every day," said the honors student. "It would be extraordinary, and I could say, 'Yeah, I flew into the school in a helicopter.'"

Ironically, it's doubtful that many students saw the landing, said Principal David E. Cunningham. The aircraft vehicle had to come down in an cleared area away from students.

Cunningham is clearly not as thrilled about the event as the boy and his father were.

"It's not something that needs to happen every day -- or ever," he said.

Honestly, I think it's awesome. Of course it would "shock" people these days, and that's the real problem; not some guy safely operating an air-going vehicle.

So what's the consensus, is there anything the FAA can do to him? Really, the only thing that can be pinned on him is 91.13, and even he might been able to fight off even that.

Now civil court for landing on private land, that's another issue. (well, actually, are school grounds private? Even so, I'm sure there's a case against it)

If the feds nail him on 91.13 I just may voluntarily surrender all of my certificates and go back to retail. There was nothing careless or reckless about that flight from what the article said. He landed away from students, in a clear area...sounds alright to me.

Now, if the city/township/whatever wants to slap him with a fine for landing without permission, that's different. But nothing at all should happen to his pilot certificates.

What a freakin cool dad!

I hope the guy doesn't get in trouble for pulling of this stunt.

The sad part is, that some one, some where, will use this stunt as a case against GA, and how GA endangers the neighborhood blah blah blah :(

Cuz GA is dangerouz

how is landing a helicopter a "stunt"?
I wouldn't say landing a helicopter is a stunt. But the whole package of landing a helicopter that just delivered a boy to his first day of HS in order to make a grand appearance a stunt. Not a bad one but a stunt none the less.

So if you bought your student an (insert super-fancy sports car) and he drove it to the first day of school, would that be a "stunt" too? You obviously don't need a super-fancy sports car, but it helps with making a grand appearance/entrance.

ZOMG! A helicopter landed someplace other than a helipad! Terror! Grab your guns and alert the authorities!
