Charging for airshow admission?

Uhhh... what?

Have you been to an airshow before?

Plenty of them, and I have never had to pay to get in. Maybe pay for a better parking spot, but not to get in the "door". What if I am at the airport for a reason other than the airshow.

Passenger airports are federally funded too, but you pay to park there don't you?

Yeah but I don't have to pay to go on a stroll through the main terminal. This is admission, not parking they are charging for. There are plenty of places to park in the area that aren't controlled by the airport.

the admission price isn't what you should be complaining about. it's the god-awful announcers and the endless "top gun" soundtrack loop you should complain about.

Dunno too many people flying out for other reasons then the airshow...

So if you are running a business at the airport, you don't expect to have any customers this weekend huh? If so, those potential customers are going to get charged just to have the chance to do business with you...

Oh well, this is stupid and I think I am going biking in the mountains anyway.

That's what your admission goes to... pay off the business. ;) :sarcasm:

The Indy Airshow at MQJ has always charged for admission tickets. http://www.indyairshow.com/ It's a VERY popular show, always well-attended.

You pay to get into OSH, and they have an airshow every day. http://www.airventure.org

The shows at MSN, RFD, JVL & DAY all charge admission. The only free one I can think of off the top of my head is the Chicago Air & Water show, where you can sit on the beach/lakefront & watch (but that show isn't really at an "airport" at all).

Typically, the airport is closed for the period of the airshow, so anyone going there during that time period is, by default, going there for something related to the airshow.

Much of the entrance fee goes towards buying fuel, paying the performers, paying for additional security, and maybe some usage fee to the airport.

I don't think I've ever been to an airshow that didn't charge for admission, other than those held on military bases (which, I believe, are always free).

The worst by far is the Tora Tora Tora announcer. I've seen that show several times, and this year the guy just spewed fascist propaganda the entire time. DO YOU LOVE YOUR COUNTRY?! I SAID, DO YOU LOVE YOUR COUNTRY!? YOU BETTER, THIS IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. NO OTHER COUNTRY EVEN COMES CLOSE!!!!

All this while the year's invited guest, the Brazillian Smoke Squadron, listened in. Seemed tacky and over the top - let me just listen to the planes.

You should be glad they charge. I can't imagine what the Dayton Air Show would look like if they didn't. Good luck seeing a static display.

Yeah, this weekend's show at Selfridge AFB was free to get in the door. Most others I've been to (Thunder of Michigan [KYIP], Dayton, etc) you had to pay to get in. Others like Traverse City's and Chicago, nope since they're on the waterfront. Although, the Angels and T-birds aren't cheap to bring in so that money has to be made up somewhere.

Kennedy Space Center is sort of a military base (at least there is one there), but they still charge (quite a bit actually- I think it was around $30, but I may be wrong).

Well, I have been to over a dozen airshows and don't recall ever paying a dime to get in to any of them. I do remember them charging for some of the close-up parking and the concessions being a bit outrageously priced and I can understand that kind of stuff. But if the airport wants to coexist with the people that live around it, they need to give something back in exchange for all the problems they cause. I think maybe I will start calling in noise complaints on the tower frequency and make one of those really loooooong and sloooow radio calls.
