Garmin 530

Are the Garmin 530 and 530W the same thing? Or is there really a difference and its not just people not typing down the 'W'? Is the 530 upgradeable to the 'W's' capabilities?

"W" = WAAS capable maybe?

Not all 530s have WAAS.
Those that do, carry the W.
All 530s can be upgraded to W.

Though if they have been upgraded the case wont have a W on the outside, but will show it in the startup screen

I would say most of the ones out there at this point have been upgraded. Garmin made it VERY attractive initially, and I think most owners took advantage of it (this is how mine got upgraded).

Originally it was $1500 for the upgrade, now It is $3500 (last I checked)

Yup, Garmin had a half off sale for the upgrade.

The W is pretty good as well. Not only can you shoot LPV approaches, you can use a WAAS equipped GPS as your sole navigational source - no other back up equipment required, ability to file alternates with only RNAV approaches. All due to the improved accuracy and redundancy provided by the WAAS system.
