South East X-country flights

Any one have a "must go" airport for me to visit? A fellow IFR student and I have been going on weekly trips across the south east. At first it was to build x-country and simulated instrument time, but we are far past that and just do it every weekend to have fun and get away. (well... i'm shooting for the magical 250, so i cant turn down someone wanting to split the cost of the A/C for the day!)

We are based in N. Florida and have hit a few of the "must go" spots. ceday key, jekyll island, BBQ and gambling runs into Mississippi, most of the florida panhandle, and just last sunday Hilton Head Island.

I was hoping my fellow JC'ers could help us out with some cool places to go. Try to keep it to the south eastern US. Crew car access would be preferable! (i'm poor... aka, a full time flight student.)

4R9-Dauphin Island Alabama. No crew car, but a good southuhn-cookin' restaurant is within walking distance. By far the coolest airport I've ever been into.

funny you should mention dauphin. last week it was either dauphin or hilton head. weather wanted us to go east (TSRA to the west) and we decided to make 4R9 our destination for this sunday. there is a hotel i believe about a mile from the airport. does anyone know if they have a restaurant?

The hotel, I don't know. But we went to some little local hole-in-the-wall that we had suggested to us by the cop who was out at the airport. He even gave us a ride over there. I had a delicious shrimp po'boy...there are pictures somewhere on here from my flight there.

Dauphin Island is good choice. I've been there many times since I fly out of BFM. MOB and BFM are just up to the North of the Island. There is a good BBQ place just towards the east end of the island, not sure about anything else.

Deland Airport (KDED) has skydivers coming in. It is kind of neat to watch and they have a small restaurant by the skydive shop. You do have to watch out for them though as they land next to the runway (or on it as a friend told me).

KSUT - Oak Island NC.
Eat at Provisions.
Enjoy relatively few tourists compared to wonderful wilmington and Myrtle Berry.

i have been to deland's airport before visiting friends at school, but thank you for the input! i do enjoy chasing down those sky divers.

have been meaning to hit up KSPG and see a rays game. i hear the stadium is withing rock throwing distance. will check it out.

KSUT looks real promising. its a little farther than i was looking for at almost 400NM from home, but very do-able. thanks for the restaurant info as well douglas. I'll be sure to hit up provisions when we make it up there.

gonna try dauphin this weekend and will ask around for the BBQ place.

thanks again for all the tips.

I don't know about cool destinations (I'm sure you can figure out what those would be), but as for airports, my top SE ones are:

1) Chanault/Lake Charles, LA - Amazing FBO, $1 entrees from the local cajun restaurant (awesome etoufee), all the snacks, coffee, soda, ice cream bars you could ever want, and a lot of interesting military and civilian traffic comes through.

2) Bay Minette, AL - Hot and friendly FBO girls, good service, reasonably close to Pensacola and Mobile.

3) Charleston Intl - Just a great town, friendly staff at the FBO

4) I see that you are from TLH, but I have to throw that one out as a great stop as well. Last time I was there they had a relatively new BMW 5 series as a loaner car.

How far you wanting to go?

Rendezvous - Memphis TN.

Best BBQ you will ever eat. The FBO will give you a car and directions on how to get there. Flying into MEM is pretty sweet for the first time. Right at dark would be a great time.

OR

Lambert's Cafe. Now this is by far the best restaurant I have been to. I am sure some folks on here have been. You might have seen this place on t.v. , only place where they throw rolls at you. The original Lambert's is in Sikeston MO. They have one in Foley AL now that would be a lot closer to you. I know the one in Sikeston runs a van from Lambert's to the airport. They have their phone number on the window of the small FBO. Not sure about Foley AL.

best BBQ ever? well i think i will have to test that out. distance is no problem for me, just have to talk my buddy into going that far!

looks like the Bahamas is the next big trip, heading out to MYAT for labor day weekend. cant wait!

and yes, flightline tallahassee is quite nice... the BMW crew cars don't hurt either. my nighthawk is equally as nice a mode of transportation to/from the airport. I even think it might be more fun.... well, definitely more fun. except for all the **** top gun comments I have to deal with.

thanks again for the opinions. keep 'em coming.

Peter O Knight (KTPF) in downtown tampa. They do have a courtesy car. Landing takes you over the bay and if you come in during the weekend use caution for cruiseships as they do interfere with final. Very cool airport though.

Yeah yeah, the bahamas will not disappoint. Don't forget to get familiar with the customs procedures and stuff, and something about filing a eAPIS form online or get fined 5k....Take some pics of the beach for us.

Back in the late 90s I used to fly to the one in AL a lot. Go into Gulfshores, AL and call the FBO when you are in range. They will then call Lambert's and will pick you up.

Head up to BHM and get the crew car. Then, go into Five Points. Good stuff.

And the best, fly into Auburn on a game day. Tailgate.
