Delta and VPS

So I remember seeing mainline equipment there last time I overnighted. Now this morning and today I see 4 ASA A/c on the ground. Over 10 departures from VPS-ATL today... I heard a mainline DAL pilot on the radio complaining about an RJ in his way yesterday on my way from CLT-VPS. He was not able to get vectored around, go up and or below him to pass and got really annoyed and made some interesting comments on the radio about the darn RJ's in the air. However after landing and this morning seeing the number of flights done from VPS-ATL I got to wondering how many other routes on DAL are being flown by regionals in the frequency like this? Just seems insane to have that many depatures from an airport to a hub.

The Delta mainline pilot should place the blame where blame is needed.

Delta Marketing who comes up with our schedules.

In Spokane we got another CRJ9 in the morning for our 615 flight to replace the 738 every other day. So that will only make Delta mainline fly into Spokane one time a day every other day.

We've always had a pretty large presence in VPS. It is an overnight maintenance base for us. The amount of mainline a/c vs. regional in there varies with the season and the whim of Delta marketing.

Oh....and if it makes that Delta guy feel any better we are ALWAYS slowing down for them in the 700/900. Those Mad Dogs and 73's climb pretty fast, but then they hit the brakes when they get to cruise.

I think another route that is like that is TYS-ATL, and the reverse. Delta mainline had been serving TYS ever since the '30s and they pulled out a couple years ago. Instead of a couple of 88's coming in twice a day (with several other flights on RJ's), its pretty much an RJ flight every hour from 0600 till 1830. Of course, this also could be a result of the economy, but as a native Knoxvillian who remembers taking Delta mainline all the time to ATL when I was younger, its very sad.

Also, I think the reason for the frequency at outstations is Delta doing the whole "Operation Clockwork" process in ATL several years ago, making ATL more of a continuous busy hub.

Yup we've got a pretty significant presence at VPS. Is it just me or does VPS approach love to string a brother out high coming into that place. Like leaving you at 11,000 feet till 20-30 miles from the airport before clearing you down.

If you knew how to fly that CRJ700 you would not have to worry about anything ;)!

Last time I went in there; We we're at 12,000ft, 19 miles out, I had slowed to 200. They cleared me for a straight in visual to runway 12...I put it all out, a few S turns and had no problem getting down in the 200. That was the most fun I'd had in a plane in a long time.
