American Sukhois

2 SU-27UBs are currently in Rockford IL being modified for flight in the US. The video shows the Russian ADI quite well along with the Russian thrust levers that often run along a rod and not in an arc like in US fighters.

For some reason I think they will be in NV flying aggressor and not frequently on the airshow circuit.

NO EFFIN WAY!!!
I worked for them for a summer!
John Morgan...he was my boss's boss.

I wonder who the L-39 owner is that bought the Sukhois...I probably worked on his L-39.

Hmmm. You think there might be a market for private contractors providing "exotic" aggressors to the USAF? Interesting.

From what I have read TACAIR was already operating a few unusual ducks and reports said there were a number of MiG-29s in the states also. The Georgians and Ukraines have shown a willingness to sell stuff for the right price although as I remember the early MiGs came out of the Balkans. I could be wrong. Anyway, the unification of Germany provided the first thorough look at the -29 so it was not a great unknown.

One has to wonder (with all the F-16s all over the world) where the Russians are operating their F-16 aggressor unit. I would believe they have at least one airframe and probably more.

Funny thing is at least a few times someone has suggested that instead of us spending bazillions developing airplanes, just buy them from Russia cheaply.

The USAF operated (has been operating? heh heh) MiG aggressors for decades.

Google "Constant Peg" -- just one declassified of many still-classified programs doing this. Have Drill, Have Donut, Have Idea, etc, and many before that, too.

The idea with the Flankers is that a private contractor can do it cheaper and better, and not have to deal with any of the hush-hush sourcing issues with the aircraft. One of the reasons for the secrecy (there are many, of course) is that the countries who supply the iron to the US don't want other countries to know about it. With deals like these Flankers purchased on the open market, there are no issues with this. There are also no issues with other countries knowing exactly what type/variant/equipment/weapons are operated by the company. There is a big cost savings by dropping big portions of the immense security blanket that goes over black programs.

When the Moldovan Fulcrums were purchased by the US in the 90s, Chrysler Aerospace and at least one other major company (Raytheon, maybe? My memory fails me) were trying to start up a "commercial aggressor" operation with them, but never actually came to fruition.

I had completely forgotten but, does anyone here know about Phoenix Aviation in Cartersville, GA (I'm sure Orange Anchor does)? They were the folks with G-1's towing target drones and did fun things with Lear 35's.

The company that has G-1's and drags target drones? Nah, not much other than that! ;)

The Russians were reportedly were not very happy when the Sukhois showed up in the US. And you know these are not 'trainers' as portrayed anymore than F-15Es are 'trainers'.

Who were the guys down at Navy Jax who were buying up MiGs for aggressors? Same?

A check of the FAA registry shows a number of MiGs here in the US. Air Assets has two -29UBs in Quincy IL (??). Also 2 -29s in Nevada. Six -23 Floggers in Oklahoma (didn't know those Sooners were a Soviet satellite) and 1 in Florida. And these are just those on the FAA registry. Which general was it killed in the -23 a decade or so ago?

Funny thing. Amid the -15s and the -29s, NO -19s. I would have thought at least 1 would have been imported.

I have run into Mark T a few times. His Chief Pilot is an old friend from WAY back. A close-to-the-vest outfit for sure.
