Although I still need to submit the paperwork, just recieved one US Navy Standard Instrument Rating with my name on it last thursday. Yay :)
 
Awesome! Jealous.

I always wondered, is there an instrument approach to a carrier? ILS type approach?
 
Yes, there is a similar system to ILS. Since I still haven't used it (I'm still a student), I'll let someone (bunk22 maybe) chime in and explain, but from my understanding they are very similar systems. Of interest, fleet jets like the Hornet and Rhino don't have civilian ILS, so stateside they have to fly TACAN or PAR/ASR instead.

Also thought you used to be in Germany. :confused:

Man I am pretty confused.

Haha, no...I've been to Germany to visit but not as a servicemember. I'm a lowly Student Naval Aviator (though I have been a civvie pilot for 8 years now.....my civvie IR ticket really didn't mean much compared to this though to be honest)

Why do you say that?
 
Different orders of magnitude of difficulty and work involved. I got my civvie ticket in a piper arrow going 150 kts, doing straightforward stuff with maybe a discussion of lost comms. My mil ticket was single pilot IFR in a high performance/tactical jet with no autopilot, shooting every type of approach, mostly partial panel with every kind of fun "emergency" you could imagine. Just very different training to be perfectly honest, though I'm certainly not bashing on my civvie school.

Well good luck in your training then. Seems to make more sense now as I was wondering why you were flying around in Germany in a training aircraft.
