IGI question

Do I need to take the instrument ground instructor test to be a IGI or will the FII test do?
 
Definately have to take an IGI test, but I think it is the same bank as the CFII. If you can spring for the test, not a bad idea methinks. You need to be a gold seal cfi or that master cfi title...
 
I don't think there is any good reason to take both tests. Save your $.

The purpose of the IGI is for some one who wants to be a ground instructor, yet does not have an instrument rating.

Having a CFII qualifies you to work as an instrument ground instructor.

Gold seal is a pretty good reason.
You can have your AGI or IGI. I think most would rather take the IGI.

Plus I got a credit at the University for getting it.

Plenty of good reasons.
 
Isnt it possible to take the IGI, then begin ground instructing before you reach 250 hours? Using the IGI as the CFI initial might make the CFI oral and ride a bit easier.

I don't know about that as the IGI does not require an oral. You would not be a CFI (certified FLIGHT instructor) with an IGI, you would be a CGI (certified GROUND instructor).

Sorry, sitting at work trying to type quickly, doesnt always come out as clear as it is in my brain.

If my understanding is correct when you take your CFI, they are pretty thorough because it is your first rating as an instructor and they want to cover everything.

If you took the IGI written and started doing ground instruction, you are still an instructor. When the time came to take your CFI, it is not your initial instructor rating so the examiner might shorten up the oral. I guess it would depend on the examiner and how well you were doing. If you were doing well he might skip portions that you should already know from ground instructing, when if you were not a ground instructor already he might still go through it all.

Was just thinking of reasons why it might be beneficial to take the IGI at the same time you take the IR and CFI written since I plan on taking the IR written shortly. If it is beneficial Ill just take all three in rapid succession, could also start earning some money on the weekends if I can find a part time ground instruction job.

If you believe that I've got a bridge to sell you. I can almost guarantee that you won't take a minute off of your CFI oral just because you completed your IGI written.

Very simple.

It is the same test, you just take it twice. If you intend on getting your IGI anyway why not do it in one shot, rather then waiting, getting stale and having to study all over again. Other then that there are none.
 
Your cFi will be your initial even with all your ground instructor certificates.

They won't care one way or the other if you have been working as an instructor.

Believe me.

Denied

Ill most likely take it and hope to find a weekend job instructing. Even if they don't shorten the oral, Ill have more committed to memory from teaching so hopefully it will reduce my stress level when taking the CFI.
