I am twenty years old and I have already lost my second dream job in aviation, this time after less than a month. I think it is time to find a new career path. The short story is that there are two owners, and each has his own airplane. Owner one flies his airplane 500 hours a year, and owner two flies his about 60. I was hired to fly owner two's plane for the company since it is rarely used. The only rule was that any trip in owner two's plane had to be approved by him. He denied use of the airplane to almost anyone who asked him, saying it would be busy, even if it wasn't. This made owner one mad and decided it was stupid for the company to pay me if all I was going to do was be owner two's personal pilot. Both are stubborn, so neither gave in, and I had to pay the price. I'll still do contract flying for them (I even have a trip this Sunday), but that means no more benefits and no guaranteed money. I did get accepted into grad school, so I guess I'll go get my MBA in Transportation and maybe get into the management side of flying.

Sorry man...

Re: Unemployeed

Sorry to hear it man, but you're only 20 years old! Quite early to give up on a career path. Don't get discouraged. Of course, if you've had a change of heart then you have to follow your gut. Best of luck.

Re: Unemployeed

Sorry to read that Alex. Try to keep moving forward. Think of it as a life learning experience and use it to your advantage in the future through additional wisdom the job has given you.

Hope it works out to be a positive for you, although I'm certain that right now its not feeling that way. Keep that chin up!

Re: Unemployeed

Sorry to hear that. Im sure you will land on your feet. It is tough out there for everyone right now. All we can do is focus on the positive aspects in our lives and appreciate everything we have.

Easy, some here would consider that akin to skinning a cat or beating a small child.

Re: Unemployeed

sorry to hear that dude, but you've already acomplished a lot at very young age you should be proud of yourself, some of us oldtimers here wish we've gotten that far at that age. ;)

Kicking a puppy. Shaking a child. Poisoning the neighbor dog.

On a serious note. Giving up when you've got this far this young seems premature.

Re: Unemployeed

Well that sucks man!

But I can tell you that you've been one of the must hard working and fortunate guys here on JC. People have put their pride and joys in your hands when they usually would look for someone older and more qualified. That says something about the impression that you make on people and your ability to network. Your willingness and confidence to fly whatever piece of equipment that you are called upon to fly, no matter what the size and speed, sets you apart from a lot of pilots that I know. I've often thought to myself about how you'd fly anything with seat and a prop on it.:)

Hopefully you over come this minor bump in the road. It really is only a minor bump. You're young enough to stumble a bit before setting your feet on solid ground.

Re: Unemployeed

That sucks man! Best of luck in what ever direction you decide to take though.

Re: Unemployeed

Alex I think it is difficult to comprehend the ups and down of the economy at such a young age - unemployment is the highest it has been in 20 years - it is tough out there. But it will come around and I am sure when it does you will be able to enjoy the rewards of the profession.

The problem with corporate aviation is the guys who have good stable jobs just don't move - it will take time for you to find one, but when you do it could easily be a 20+ year position.

Re: Unemployeed

Thanks for the kind words. I know I probally shouldn't piss and moan too much as I have had it pretty good and there are plenty of others on here who have lost there jobs too. I just wanted to vent a little.

This was supposed to be one of those good, stable jobs. This company had its best month in June and is forecasted to do better in July. We had a new plane delievered last month and another is coming in Sept. It is completely a political thing inside the company that I got caught in the middle of.

Re: Unemployeed

Sorry to hear. You've had a lot of good fortune. Give this some time to sink in. Don't need to bat 1.000 in your career to be happy!

Re: Unemployeed

Damn man, it sucks how money just runs the world.

You'll be fine, grad school is important anyhow, and I bet you might find better stability in management :)

Re: Unemployeed

You're giving up already? Don't do that! I know a guy who got furloughed from 2 airlines in 1 year (YV, AX) and he's still plugging along as a CFI. You're way younger than him, hang in there!

Sorry about the job....but don't turn to the dark side just yet. You're young and have a long career ahead of you. That being said, going back to school is never a bad idea.

Good luck to you, in whatever you decide to pursue!!!

Re: Unemployeed

I was once told that being in the aviation business was going to be the most challenging career path I could have ever chosen and its true.

My uncle is a pilot for american airlines and he has this quote in his logbook. "Luck is when opportunity meets success."

This business is hard and it takes someone who is very determined to make it.
