Air France "black box" possibly found

Correct me if I am wrong but the regs state the operating period has to be a minimum of 30 days. So not +/- a little bit 30 days. - 0 seconds, + some. Chances are it will last a couple of days past 30.

you read the regs as I do. It must have a life of at least 30 days AFTER water activation. Nothing about new batteries, shelf life, etc. 30 days AFTER activation.

Time to add a device that will keep the black box afloat?

I reckon if they were to do that, it would be concurrent with requiring multiple underwater locators be installed on other large bits of the aircraft. The pinger also helps locate the wreckage.

That's great in concept, but the boxes are enclosed in the airplane. Unless everything above it happens to fall away, there's a good chance the box could be trapped under debris from the wreckage. A floating device may not necessarily be able to free it from the aircraft.

what about a device that ejects itself from the main wreckage... although that might defeat some of its purpose.

Could it be fitted with those expanding packets of air like the emergency life boats and such? maybe then it could push stuff out of the way.

I know a Black Box is tough but can it really stay alive at -20,000 ft?

Isn't the pressure there something like 8 tons per square inch?

Here's an easy fix. Just put a couple of ejection seats up front. JK

With technology today it seems like we could have live streaming of the FDR/CVR data to an offsite facility like NASA for safe keeping until needed.

Also seems like the black boxes could be updated to work with the SARSAT system on the 406Mhz band and transmit their GPS location if they are above water. I am not sure what improvement could be made for underwater boxes.

Are the pingers water activated only or do they go off at a specifc G-load?

I believe they are water activated.
