I was up in the Dallas area today and on the reccomondation of a friend stopped by to see the 9/11 memorial in Grapevine...and I'm glad I went. It's very well done and I suggest paying a visit if you ever get to the DFW area.

That's very nicely done.

I actually knew Leroy Homer personally.

Leroy was a 141 pilot in the AF/AF Reserve, wasn't he?

Yes sir.

I took that whole situation very personally because of that. Still hard to talk about, especially when you know what happened to someone you personally knew.

Hard to believe we are going on eight years. I remember waking up that morning getting ready for school, turned on the TV and I thought I was watching a movie and then I saw the second hit and realized that this was real. Those are really neat monuments.

I was sitting on my bed after a night of debauchery arguing with Kristie about how I probably wasn't going to be able to make her sister's wedding on the 12th.

Then I called the captain (Fred Smitham, I still remember) telling him that pickup probably isn't at 1100 and that I've been on hold with crew sched for the past hour trying to figure out what the plan was.

Right after a night watching the moonrise over the eastern seaboard thinking "Holy cow, we're hiring 100 pilots a month, I can almost hold mad dog captain in my third year, it can only get better from here".

9/11 is one of those days when years from now when people will still ask "where were you when?".

I was in Saskatoon Canada on vacation. I supposed to fly back into Philly on the 13th. After finally getting to fly from Saskatoon to Toronto, I had to take a midnight Greyhound to Philly. The bus stopped in Manahattan before going on to Philly. Seeing the smoke from WTC was an intense feeling.

That vacation had some good memories too. I had just spent the summer draggin rags in Jersey and at that time, I still had thoughts of flying the heavy stuff. The captain asked me to ride jump seat on the flight from Philly to Toronto. It was incredible. It was the first time I noticed that the heavies have to deal w/ crosswinds too. Got to ride up front all the way to the gate.

Wow i never knew that was in grapevine i'm up there all the time and have never seen it! i'l have to check it out:rawk:

Corner of Texan Trail and Business 114 on the corner by Starbucks and a bar/restaurant complex... if you go to my flickr link and click on one of the pictures of the memorial there's a map link on the bottom right hand corner

outside my class room with my class getting a book read to us (4th grade) then having the principal coming out to get me saying she needed to talk to me. Getting the oooohhh you're a bad kid from all my class mates I walked with her confused and scared that I was in trouble. We sit in her office and the phone if off the hook and she looks at me and says "your mother is on the phone, she needs to talk to you". ..."hello?" "hey sweetie its your mom (through panting breaths and what sounds like running) something bad has happened and a plane has been taken over and done a lot of damage. We were taxing out and we watched the plane hit a building. We had to evacuate and I'm not sure what will happen, but I might not be coming home. So just know that if I don't come home, I will be watching you from heaven and I love you. Tell your brother (pre-k) that I love him too. I need to go now. I love you."

Did she get out?

Did she get out?

yeah, they stayed in the basement of the airport for about 4 hours cause they didnt know exactly what was going on, but she was stuck in D.C. for a while and my birthday is on the 14th so she wasn't there for that and we were all still shocked and scared of something else happening.

That memorial is on the way home for me if I take the backroads from the airport. It's nice to have a reminder of that right in the background.

After a long, gritty trip and I'm just glad to be off and feeling whiny about the grind, it's a sobering reminder of how bad it could be and how grateful I should be,

It's of interest to note that there's a rooftop/patio bar in the building behind it.

When you sit out on it and sip your beverage, you can have a simultaneous view of the memorial and the planes landing south at DFW.

Perhaps next time we have a M&G for frosty adult beverages we should check that out.

Just finishing flight training when it happened. Woke up, in my dorm room, friend down the hall called and said to turn on the tv, turned it on right at the moment that number 2 hit the building..... with lots of pilots on my floor we all huddled around the TV and watched it unfold....

It was weird though, the other day, A kid born in december 2001 came up to me, and just jokingly said, "Im smarter than you are, na na, and ran away" I laughed so hard, but a few hours later, i realized that I think he was the first person ive talked to born after 9/11... meaning... obviously, there are people going to grow up very shortly that have no idea of a pre 9/11 world, or were witness to the horror that day and everything that has unfolded since.

Just was weird to think about thats all.....in the scence of one of those... "wow your old things", "when i was your age, pluto was a planet" etc etc...

just my .02 on it...
