6 L.A. area pilots violate presidential TFR

MarkE

Greetings, Professor Falken
I'm no genius by any means and I know I could possibly make this mistake in the future but, really?? I received 3 advance emails alerting the coming TFR, not to mention that that president's pending visit was on the news a couple days prior as well.

6 private pilots face sanctions for violating Obama flight restrictions

Action will be taken against six private pilots who violated flight restrictions that were in effect during President Obama's visit to Los Angeles this week, Federal Aviation Administration officials said Thursday.

Ian Gregor, an FAA spokesman, said the pilots face possible suspensions and revocations of their pilot certificates for intruding into restricted airspace between 1:05 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday. Local air traffic controllers observed the errant flights and contacted the pilots.

During the president's stay, private pilots were barred from flying into, out of or near Los Angeles International Airport, Santa Monica Airport, Hawthorne Municipal Airport, Van Nuys Airport and Bob Hope Airport. Exceptions were made for airlines, law enforcement aircraft and emergency medical flights.

were they under flight following? Did the ATC bother to tell them before they entered the airspace?

It sucked flying in socal that day, and they did keep changing the times on the tfr, but it was notamed and ATC even made sure to remind people (at least at SNA) when we picked up clearance. I landed about 20 minutes before it went active. Wasn't a problem. You would have to have been living under a rock to not have known the president was in town that day.

I know of at least 6 people who were :)

Really though I know we all make mistakes but TFR info is not that hard to find. In my experience ATC here has been really good about letting pilots know.

It's part of Slick Pilot schools hour building programme - 1 guy under the hood and 5 safety pilots crammed into a warrior.

All of a sudden no one wants to log PIC??

A C.F.I. and a student at my old flight school went about 6 miles inside of a presidential TFR a couple years back. Needless to say he was asked to leave...

If you can fly an airplane, you should have enough brains to check things like NOTAMS and TFR's (and ya know...all those other standard briefing items). This "preflight" applies to all kinds of transportation. I get a kick out of my friends in PHX who complain about getting stuck on the freeway for an hour due to construction that was announced in the paper, on the TV news, and even on the highway information signs they drive under enroute to said traffic jam. I'll remind someone to check their route once, but after that they have to learn from :banghead:.

I hope they get revoked. If they're not checking something as simple as a TFR, who knows what else they're not checking before they get in the air. Even if they knew about the TFR's its still their responsibility to stay clear if they on flight following.

OMG:panic:

I would've loved to hear the communications that ensued over the radios. "Umm Cessna 123 you are 5 miles inside a TFR, anticipate an escort aircraft to arrive shortly and take you to the nearest airport." Can anyone find the recordings? lol

We were flying around LA all day, and we heard a lot of GA pilots asking ATC where the boundaries were because the TFR and graphics weren't written well....at least that's what their excuse was. At least they asked

Just immediately squawk standby. :D

That's what's nice about www.airspace.nifc.gov because you get this

Sure, a TFR is a TFR and simple dilligence would prevent a big headache-but that list is expansive-and virtually shuts down GA in the basin and SF Valley. I suppose if you're based in Hawthorne you could just take the wings off and truck it to Torrance, Compton or LGB....

It just seems a bit excessive. Glad I live somewhere only interesting to Presidents during an election year now.
