That's it, I'm dropping my AOPA membership.

Your right about the $39. For $99 dollars a year they'll cover 80% of costs up to $167/hour.

Good luck finding a decent aviation attorney for $167/hr. Something in the range of $300-$400 would be more typical.

Is it the greatest in the world? No. But then again not all of us have the precious ALPA at our backs. Then again I'm not paying $1500 a year or whatever union dues are.

Union dues don't just pay for legal support, they pay for contract negotiations, safety structure, lobbying, aeromedical, grievance, etc... The legal support is the least of it. Like Seggy said, worth every penny.

I would love to be covered by ALPA but I don't see us getting a union anytime soon.

I used to be in Teamsters and I received absolutely nothing from them except a good stab in the back. I hope I am never in a Teamsters shop again.

I think junk mail is a small inconvience to be a member and support such a great organization. Is AOPA perfect? No. Is not being a member any better? No. Youll probably still get junk mail too... they seem to have a master list of all pilots in the US, even if you told the FAA to make your address private.

Do some more reading. Virtually every "user fee" proposal that has ever been made has excluded true GA aircraft and kept it to the corporate and fractional operators. The guy buzzing around in his Cessna on the weekends would be untouched. AOPA is using you and your membership dollars to defend the rich guys with their airplanes that you'll never be able to afford.

Did you read that in ALPA's monthly pub?

aopa is a great thing to have, i let it lapse for the same reasons as the thread starter, and the junk mail only got worse... 'come back!' they pretty much spent $100 dollars because they lost 40. whatever, one call ended most of the junk bull, and now a year later i have it again. Whether aopa gets anything done is important, but its basically a 40 dollar broad spectrum inscurance policy as far as i am concerned. :rawk:

I think the rabid unionist are missing the point. Not all of us are so lucky to be covered by the mighty union so we have the next "best" thing-AOPA legal services. Its a great service. Some of us like and want GA in this country. AOPA is great for that. You don't like the junk mail call AOPA and ask to be removed from all mailings. They'll be more than happy to accommodate.

Eek! You're a member of a special interest group?! :sarcasm:

Nah, I'm just giving you hell, bro, I'm a proud card-carrying member of both ALPA and AOPA. I just wish I could afford to rent an airplane on occasion.

How is it possible that Agent Smith doesn't have the money to rent an aircraft from time to time?
