Makes you feel a little better about your crappy landings huh, guess it happens to the best of us.
 
i don't think they are but are the wings designed to drag a little because with only 2 wheels, it can't be the most stable platform?

The wingtips can be replaced and they are designed to take some scrapes. On takeoff the pogos will drop (if all goes well) and on landing the ground crew will chase and replace them.

I fly with a gentleman that has some U-2 time. He told me his training consisted of going out to Groom Lake, where a 14 mile long stretch of pavement unveiled from the desert beneath them to practice landings on. He floated 14 miles on the first try.
 
Remember that most of the landings in that video are guys who are doing their interview flight as part of applying to be part of the U-2 program.

First landings in a new aircraft type are a b*tch.

Very true, you know what sucks even more? When you've gotten really comfortable in one airplane type, and go to another one that lands completely differently and you botch the landing even though you've got plenty of time in type.
 
I would love to hear the radio transmissions between the chase car and the U-2. I'd be really surprised if I didn't hear a few, "Oh my God", or, "Oh " going either way. Thanks for the post!

My bet is that the words are a little more colorful than that, if needed.
 
Great Vid.

My dad commanded the 9th IS (In God We Trust, All Others We Monitor) back in the day. Hooked me up with a ride in the chase cars. It is amazing how overpowered the thing is. It climbs something crazy.

It was awesome to blast down the old B-52 alert ramp in a camaro doing 125 chasing the dragonlady.

"15....12....10.....5 right.....5......."
 
Interesting,

They need some glider time I think. :laff:

I never realized how much the U2 looks like the 2-32.

Its great for giving rides, but it handles like a boat, and doesn't even really feel like a glider.
