Hey so I'm gonna be in austin for a week and the old place i used to rent from closed up shop.

I know some of you guys are there in austin, whats the options like these days? Any referrals? PM me if you want or post info here. thanks!!

oh, and id just be looking for a 172 or similar....unless someone wants to work a deal with me to get my high-performance endorsement and checkout done at the same time... :-)

stupid UND not having any aircraft over 200hp!! grrr.

I've flown with Austin Academy of Aviation a few times but that was back in like 2002 I think. At the time they had brand new top of the line 172's. Not sure on their prices, or honestly if they're even still around.

looked on their website and theyve got some 01 SP's and i think an 05 G1000... nice stuff... no listing on PRICES though, or if they even rent out to renters...

They do rent to renters.

It's over $100 an hour, I know that.

The DA-40s at Streamline are around $160 an hour.

Have you thought about KGTU? It's only 35 mins up to Georgetown.

thats where i used to rent at adventure aviation but they folded.

any info on other operators there, or san marcos? ill actually be staying in south austin, GTU is a loooong way in traffic nowdays.

Sorry to hear that. My peeps are from P'ville; I have no data for anything S. of Town Lake. I'll ask around though.

It's "Ladybird Lake" now.

After she passed away they renamed it (and finally built another section onto the football stadium that blocked the view of the capital from her office in the LBJ library).

S. of Town Lake is my neck of the woods. Way south. Like, south of 71 south.

Depending on the drive you want to make, Lockhart might be your next best bet if you don't want to go north. Stenger Air is down there. They've got a few planes, but I don't know if they rent to people or not.

Call George at the UFC - PM me if you need his number - he'd likely work something out with you. $500 down gets you the block rate. :D

Last time I was there they rented out the planes to just anyone. I just went over there and told them I wanted to fly and got a check out flight done.

No help on prices, I'm sure a quick call could asnwer that. Def wouldn't want to drive to Georgetown to fly if you're in South Austin. I agree that Lockhart might be better as far as closeness, but I have no info of anyone down there.

KillBilly are you saying over 100/hr is expensive?

... and, if you can't find a place to rent, we'll know you have plenty of money to sponsor a M&G. :D

KillBilly are you saying over 100/hr is expensive?

Yeah, but it depends on the airplane. Over $100 an hour for a really, really nice airplane, like a late-model 172 with a good avionics package I guess is okay.

But for under a hundred you can find a few airworthy beaters if you know where to look. :laff:

Yeah I guess I'm just used to prrices over here in SE Houston. 135/hr for a 172R/S

There is a place that is cheap as hell over in SW that has 172's for well under 100/hr. Especially if you buy block time.

Heck, I'd like to know too. Sounds like I haven't been shopping around enough. :)

I've written a few detailed posts about Austin over the years. I'll keep this one simple:

KAUS:

Austin Academy: Overpriced unless you just have to have a shiny new 172SP and G1000.

Streamline: Great guys...also pricy. Diamond fleet.

Compass: Very small outfit and tough to get a hold of. PM me if you want to try them. 2003 SP that rents for a bit cheaper than AAoA.

University Flying Club: Old ugly birds, but cheap and convenient. I instructed with them a lot. They'd be my recommendation, but expect to find a squawk or two or three everytime you fly.

Other Flying Clubs: Don't know anything about them, but they exist.

50R: (Lockhart)

Stenger Air: Great people. Old, but very well maintained birds. They've got a great 150, PA-28, and maybe a 172. The rates are tough to beat. From the south side of Austin, the drive is not too bad.

KHYI: (San Marcos)

I think Griffin Aviation has a 172, Arrow, and maybe something else. I've never flown with them.

KGTU: (Georgetown)

Adventure Aviation: Folded after stealing tons of money.

Pilot's Choice: I had an unpleasant time working there, but they've got a large fleet and most of the birds are pretty nice. Nothing fancy and new. Rates are pretty average, but give your instructor a tip because he's not making on the $40/hr you're paying.

There are two more schools out there that I don't know much about. Call the terminal and I'm sure they can hook you up with the info you need.

last i checked.. AAoA, they charge something like 140-160 i think for their cessnas and 40 bucks for the instructor rate

Stenger is good. Otherwise drive to San Antonio (1hr) and rent from either Wright Flyers (kind of pricey), Alpha Tango (look at the logbooks), or Sky Safety in SSF airport. Sky Safety has a good reputation but I don't know what their prices are.

Can't really beat Alpha Tango's prices. (Used to be $66/hr for a 152, $210/hr for a 310 when oil was high.) The airplanes are really old but the maintenance is pretty good these days, or at least was a year ago. Most of the 152s use those box intercoms and handmics, with only 1 navcom so strictly VFR. I used to carry one of those portable PTTs in my headset bag for when I was flying them, would disconnect the handmic and use my headset and the portable PTT.

well if theyre still new fleet not bad compared to SE houston. I'm paying 135/hr for either a 172 r or s. GPS only real added convenience, and only the R has a working one.
