CFI Renewal and IACRA

Any IACRA gurus out there?

I finished my FIRC and am trying to IACRA my CFI renewal. After filling everything out I get to step six and it says:

Go Back to Step 3 to correct the following problems:
•Applicant does not hold appropriate ratings to apply for Certified Flight Instructor.

So I go back to step three and see both my commercial and flight instructor certificates are properly entered.

I'm also sure I'm applying for the correct thing - here is the path:

Path: Instructors > Flight Instructor > Standard > Firc - Flight Instructor Refresher Course > Renewal

Any ideas?

There is a help number for IACRA. Of course, you will have to wait until Monday to call it. My experience calling them was very positive.

Try 866-285-4942 toll free or 405-954-7272. I'm not 100% certain those are the right numbers, but I think that is the current number.

When you do get ready to take it to the FSDO, use the IACRA generated 8710-1 and fill out an 8710-1 on paper. That way when you get there if the computers are having problems or the inspector on duty isn't well versed in IACRA, then there is a Plan B. You could wait until you get to the FSDO and fill out a paper copy there if you need to, but it is more comfortable doing it at home ahead of time.

Also, just as a reminder, check to find out if the FSDO requires appointments so you don't make a trip there for nothing.

i just tried to log in at home see if i could see the problem.
1. I Forgot I can't, it doesn't support any browser but Internet Explorer, which isn't available to my computer.
2. IACRA sucks.
3. Good luck

Called the help line per Peter's suggestion and the problem was a weird one, but easy to fix.

On my IACRA commercial certificate it read "INSTRUMENT AIRPLANE & HELICOPTER," like it does on my physical certificate. When the system looked at it to see if I was qualified to be a flight instructor, it looked for "INSTRUMENT AIRPLANE" and couldn't recognize it because of the "& HELICOPTER" part of it, so I had to separate them into two entries.

I filled out an IACRA app when I got my ground instructor certificate. I went to the FSDO, and the secretary asked if I had filled out an 8710. I said "yes, mam. I completed the IACRA."

She gives me a blank stare. And then she says, "we don't use IACRA here." I was floored. She says this FSDO does not use IACRA.

So she hands me a paper 8710 and I fill it out. I give the 8710 to the inspector, the inspector hands it to the secretary. The secretary types out my temporary certificate, hands it to the inspector, the inspector signs it, and hands it to me.

Bottom line: Don't let technology get in the way of federal jobs.

Welcome to the wonderful world of computers. I had to use IACRA for my CFI renewal too. What a pain. They wouldn't let me register, because somehow I was already registered and didn't know about it (or remember it). Then I had to call and give them about 32 different e-mail addresses I've used over the past few years so they'd change my info and send me a new password.

I could have been done in about 10 minutes (showed up with duplicate 8710s complete) but was there about an hour.:banghead::banghead::banghead:

Please go to this web site:

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/afs/qms/

select the specific FSDO from the pull down list and report that information. Send me a PM if you have any questions or need any assistance.

Turned out I didn't need IACRA at all. Showed up at the BNA FSDO today (no appointments needed) with a printed 8710 and was out of there in 10 minutes with my temp. Easy!

Are you sure? That just sounds too simple and smooth for a government operation...
