PUBNAT 5- Announcement ending 7/31

right...

what statistics would those be again?

Like I said:

I think we can all agree, unless there's some sort of hard evidence (a report or something) none us really know what states are or aren't hiring. We can guess based on the numbers of people we've seen get accepted or rejected here, but in reality it's just guessing.

California has about 35 control towers. SoCal and NorCal TRACON, and two ARTCCs and they are fully staffed!!

:rotfl:

Somewhat off topic, but thought I'd share my e-mail from FAA:

"We have a selection panel that convenes once a quarter to make their selections, so you will not receive the geographical preference e-mail until approximately 2 months prior to a selection panel conveying. At this time, we do not expect to have a selection panel
scheduled until sometime in April"

Of course, they didn't say that they actually have one scheduled for April, but one can hope.

So does that mean that they'll be scheduling the panel FOR April or IN April? Confusing wording.

Which would you have a better shot of getting. a Tower or a center? I think we really need some more information to make an informed choice, i have no real care where i go though i have places i care for

Choose both.

I heard that at selection panels, the applicants with higher scores are placed at the top of the list. Does anyone know of this is true? I've also heard that they never actually know your score, just well-qualified or qualified, but this doesn't seem to make as much sense. Why even get a score then?

yeah, everyone I've talked to from HR says that it's just Q or WQ, but I agree -- that wouldn't make much sense at all. Maybe it's a situation where it's just WQ or Q until two applicants are exactly equal everywhere else then they look at actual scores?

I'm hoping that there will be a panel meeting IN april, but if that were the case we'd probably already have geo pref e-mails because...two months before april is, in fact, february...

But then why even get a numerical score? Are well going for valedictorian or something and need to compare GPA's?

The fact that Q and WQ even exist would imply that that's all they look at. If people were ranked by the raw score, then what would be the point of randomly calling some Q and some WQ?

I mean, dozens have said that based on their experience in the field, the AT-SAT doesn't seem to be a good indicator of actual job performance, so maybe they assume that all WQ's are equally qualified?

I agree it's a seemingly arbitrary way to do things, but it does seem to be the case.

I do see your point. I guess it's like grades in college. A 93% is an A and so is a 99%, so it doesn't matter which you got. I guess my question would be why tell us our numerical score if it doesn't in fact serve a purpose. I'm not really complaining, I guess I'm just curious. I mean, other than bragging rights, is there any point?

I'm sure that's exactly it. It doesn't hurt you or help you for you to know your score, so why worry about the reason they told us? Just be glad its a WQ :)

Sorry, not true. They do look at your ACTUAL score. Not just well qualified, qualified type thing.

They lump the qualified and well qualified to whether or not they'll consider you in the most basic terms. If they're hiring 5,000 controllers, and they have 5,000 well qualified people, and 2,000 qualified controllers, they dont even consider the qualified people. They'll pick from the WQ area first. If they have 4,500WQ, and 5,000Q, then they'll start choosing from the Q area. However, i've been told they'll pick the HIGHEST qualified people (i.e. 84% over a 70%).

is there an actual list out there of where the FAA is hiring for and specific #s for hirings?

From everything I've heard, there's no definitive list, at least in the sense that it has every facility, current numbers, and ideal numbers. Basically, you just have to call and talk to the hiring managers at each place and even then, you may get info, you may not.

In our application process, we were told that they were only hiring those that were WQ (85 and higher). So it seems they always start at the top and work down. So, like a previous post said, it is all in the scores of everyone who applied during your application.

That's correct. Each facility has a goal range of CPC's that, under ideal circumstances, it will have. It's unlikely that a facility manager will tell you exactly what that number is if you call, but they'll probably at least give you an idea of their current situation.

I received this email today from the training manager in Salt Lake City:

"There has not been a hiring freeze anywhere at this time. Hiring has been
cut way back FAA wide due to decrease in traffic volumes and a decrease in retirements due to the current economy. FAA finance is looking at all
facilities in the country and reassessing hiring needs. They predict traffic to continue to decrease through 2020. We hope to know something by the end of March. At this time facilities do not know how many they will be authorized to hire or when. The next time the hiring panel is scheduled to meet is the April/May/June time frame and we would be able to select from PUBNAT5 at that time. Pending the results of the reassessment that may be pushed to July/Aug Sept. We just do not know at this time. Please feel free to give me a call if you have any other questions. Thank you for being interested in Salt Lake ARTCC!!"

My original email:

I would like to request your help in clarifying the current hiring
opportunities for Air Traffic Controllers in Salt Lake City. As a PUBNAT 5
applicant, I received a 90.3 on my ATSAT and am now waiting for geografical preferences. Since there have been rumors of a hiring freeze in SLC, I feel unsure about placing Utah as one of my geo. preferences, although I would love to stay in Utah. I am open to both Tower and Enroute facilities.
