TSA at your FBO

Today I walked in to work at the FBO and behold, there stood five TSA people. Usually they just do a random ID check but today I got the full body pat down. It's bad enough dealing with it at the main terminal, but now at my job working as a lineman? That just blows.
 
So, what happens if they find a gun on you? Last time I checked it wasn't necessarily illegal to possess a weapon on a privately owned aircraft or outside the airline "sterile area".

Oh, and is it now the law that one must carry ID in an FBO? That's a new one.
 
Unfortunately, I think that this is just the beginning of bad things to come with regards to the TSA and general aviation.
 
Interesting. Last I heard, they had a NPRM out that would require TSA screening for all passengers of aircraft over 12,500

It hasnt been made into law yet and probably wont, The logistics of such a rule would be insanely complex... and with the financial situation of the Federal government these days, I just dont see how they would ever pull it off.

WHat happened at the OP's FBO is just an isolated case of the TSA making thier random checks. They do these at flight schools too.
 
NBAA is circulating a letter saying that the TSA is not authorized to do this (yet). If they show up at your airport, call (202)783-9000. They will immediately get in touch with the TSA and inform them of the unauthorized operation. The TSA should instruct the screeners to refrain from any further activity.
 
They have been visiting our FBO every 6 months or so to check over training records and to make sure employees have ID badges. Also an inspector will usually come as well to watch over hired contractors that screen NCAA charters and to make sure we are compliant with a "sterile" ramp.

Out of all of that no one gets patted down though.
 
According to my supervisor they are allowed to do what they want. We have signs hanging up saying that it is a secure area and we are subject to being searched by TSA. For the most part they pre-screen the folks leaving out on the sports charters. But every now and then they come over to our building and check our i.d.'s which we are required to have. The i.d. is just the usual airport badge. They must know our schedule for shift changes because they always show up right around 2 p.m. and then leave shortly after that.
 
Toonces, it's funny you mention that. Maybe next time I'll carry a large bottle of shampoo and some other liquids to see what they do. :D
 
The TSA was at my airport on Super Bowl Sunday, along with the Department of Homeland Security. They didn't do anything at all, just sat around and drank coffee pretty much.
 
What exactly are they looking for? Nothing says you can't carry a BIG F-ING GUN on a GA airplane.
 
glad i just fly out of small oklahoma airports for now. I hated putting up with TSA when i was a ramper for xjet in OKC last summer
 
So now TSA is going to be at all the small airports as well?

That will equal how many more THOUSAND of TSA employees making 40,000$ a year??!!

Ridiculous. :mad: What a freakin waste.
 
I hate it when they come to check our school. Were the only 141 program in the state, so we get the brunt not only from the FSDO, but from the TSA. They like to come here, check our records, and tell us "O, there is a new rule... you'll be getting that in writing later". They make up their own crap like they are god... I hate them...
