Branson Offers Capt. Sully a Job (double the pay)

I think in this there is a really positive omen for pilots of the world.

A) An obvious disaster was preventing from becoming outright unfathomable tragedy by the skills of a highly experienced set of pilots and cabin crew.

B) The most experienced and responsibility laden of the bunch has just been offered a copious amount of money for his demonstration of superior skill.

In other words, we've just seen superior, experienced piloting get offered a FAT RAISE based on his perceived value to safety.

When have we seen THAT in the past decade?

This is an obviously positive event that we should encourage to some extent, with due diligence to avoiding an out-and-out free for all.

According to APC.com, 6 year (top off) A320 pay for Virgin America is $120/hr. Is Branson saying he will pay him $240/hr? At 70 hr. minimum guarantee, that is $201,600 per year, excluding any other kind of bennies.

According to APC.com, 16 year (top off) A320 pay for USAirwys is $142/hr. At a minimum guarantee of 72 hr., that is $122,688 per year, excluding any other kind of bennies.

I know about all of the Union stuff, and realize how pilots (most) feel about being unionized, but if the vast majority of Americans had the opportunity to get a roughly 40% raise, I doubt as though many would pass it up. I wouldn't blaim him for taking it, assuming that is the offer.

Sometimes you have to look out for yourself, and not everybody else. If someone has the opportunity to move on, and do better, I say all the power to them. People leave one job/company for another, all of the time, in other industries, for more money, etc.

One of the only reservations I would have with this, is where will VA be, 10 years from now? Will they still exist, or will they be long gone. What, if that happens, does Sir Branson have in store for Captain Sully?

Not to mention the fact that the "all for one" attitude hasn't realy helped much for the last 20 years. Why is it that pilots are makeing less now than 20 years ago? Never mind inflation. My "mentors" started out makeing more as a 1st year FO than any one of the airlines pay these days. The days of makeing $300g flying 14 days a month to "down udna" and back are long gone. You must be flying now because thats what you want to do, and don't worry about the money. I do this because I love to, not to get rich. But If I could get rich doing it, like Sully has the chance to, I'D JUMP ON IT LIKE STINK ON ######!:nana2:
