I think the issue is that he isn't physically qualified to make a career out of it....or at least in the traditional sense

I don't understand how there is any debate over this...

All you need is a third class to apply for the rating, and a second class to exercise your right to be paid...Furthermore, I say go for the Commercial rating. If for anything, its a personal accomplishment, and thats good enough for me!

that is how I read the regs too.

You can have an ATP and fly with a 3rd class medical. You just can't exercise any privleges higher than the private pilot certificate would allow.

I'll give you one Apollo 13 AME story... No Lie... on my first exam(class 3) the guy offered me a rectal exam. He said it was "optional" but he recommended it. I told him !@#$ no, thanks anyway. Then he put me on the antique vision machine, told me to look in and read it. I told him it was too blurry to read, we argued about my vision for 5 full minutes until he finally looked in the damn thing and realized he did it wrong. Creepy SOB and it took me over an hour for the exam. As a follow up, my next was a class one(from a different AME but I was scared to death) and it was a piece of cake, less than 30 minutes.

Embry-Riddle in San Diego has an articulation agreement with one of the local colleges. In order for me to get my Bachelors I would need 36 credits from Embry-Riddle and 84 from my college for a total of 120. However, if I receive my Commercial rating, they will deduct 36 credits from the 84 I have to take at my college. So 36 at Embry-Riddle, 48 from college, and 36 for free. For a total of 120.

hehe, one of my buddies was telling me the other day...he went for a class 1 medical....and the AME offered him a free prostate exam :insane:

No I wouldn't. I stopped being surprised with the stuff people come up with a long time ago. Just have a hard time figuring out where it comes from.

Go for it man.

The commercial is a fun rating and you'll be a better pilot for the experience. When you hit ATP mins I say go for that too.

That's what great about aviation, there's always something new to learn.

Be warned though, you'll have to put up with a bunch of questions from non-pilots once you have it.

"well, I have a commercial pilot's certificate"
"Cool, what airline do you fly a 747 for?"
"Um, I don't fly for an airline."
"whaaaat?"
