To Drive or not to Drive...

Just doing some forward thinking. I am wondering if it would be beneficial to drive to Oklohoma or to fly. On one hand, I think it would be nice to have my own wheels there for four months, and not be depended on anyone else for rides, especially to show up to class on time. On the other hand, with driving there, there is also driving back. It is a thirty hour trip there, then the same back and another 48 hours to Alaska where I will be working. I read on this site that some places let you have up to a week before you show up to work. That does not leave alot of time if I also plan on packing up my whole family. That doesnt really leave much time for sleeping. So I was wondering if anybody else has thought about this, or if there is trouble getting rides to class. Thanks....

We drove from SLC to OKC. It is 1200 miles and took about 20 hours. We only stayed in a hotel 1 night (our kids are AWESOME travelers and we only stopped a total of 4 times including the hotel stop between SLC and OKC). It cost us $202 total for hotel, gas and food. We were reimbursed $481.

Having a car is DEFINITELY beneficial! How long you have to get back to your facility depends solely on your facility. My husband has 1 day after he finishes his class. We will basically have the same drive back as we had here.

I drove all the way from Washington (are you in Shelton WA?). Definitely recommend it. It's nice to have a car down here. Stayed in two hotels and killed one coyote with the car.
Of course I'm lucky in that I graduate on a Thursday, so Friday is my "one day" to get back, but then I have the weekend too :)

you just need to communicate with your facility. You are eligible for up to 64 hours of travel time that can be saved for use for 2 years. If you dont ask you wont get it. 1 day of travel is completely unreasonable. Seriously, just talk to u r facility and odds are you will get at least some of those 64 hours

Oh I know, I just don't need it. 3 days is plenty. I may ask for the Monday off so my wife and I can find apartment but I don't know yet.

I don't know about you guys but when I have some time off, I like to see the local sights, get out and see the local attractions and I don't like having to rely on someone else as a taxi service. Although some people amaze me and pull it off all through college ect. I guess if you had a good bike you could pull it off okay or you could pick up a junker once you get there. It really stinks to if you ask a girl out and then end with ahh you don't mind driving do you or hey lets take the bus!!! :). It would be nice to save the insurance and gas money though so I guess you do what you gotta do.

1. I don't know what "local sights" there are here in OKC, but if you find any, let me know...
2. A bike isn't really an option either since there is a severe lack of sidewalks in Oklahoma. It's the weirdest thing I have ever seen.
3. If you don't mind being a shut-in or walking everywhere through people yards (remember, no sidewalks) the FAA shuttle really isn't bad. You can't get in trouble for showing up to class late when you take the bus, and all you have to do is make a friend in your class that has a car so you can get to the store. I'm saving money on gas and insurance AND I have no motivation to drive around and look at all the dead grass and churches.

Bricktown really is kinda cool...you need to make it down there seahawker12!

I agree on the sidewalk thing! I walked to my older daughters school yesterday and it was quite the task with my little one due to no sidewalks and safety. I was reminded more than once we shouldn't walk in the road cause cars were there; however, the grass is course and sticky. I ended up stopping lots to empty my daughters shoes of "pokies".

I drove! Just a warning... when you think you're all alone on the road, you're really not. Oklahoma police are sneaky! They clocked me via AIRPLANE going 113 in a 70 WTF!!! So now I have $400 ticket to pay. Yippey! Hey, at least they didn't arrest me like they would have back in Houston!

lol the only reason the airplane tagged you was because he saw you driving faster than he was flying. Seriously man...113???

There are things to do in OKC. Bricktown is good but you have to pay a lot for parking. Some places will give you a token though.

OH and we do have pro basketball now. Ok never mind that they are the worst team in the league but we are getting better

Yeah, why do you think we (seattle) were not sorry to see them go? lol. I almost brought a yellow sonics jersey down to go to a game in. Maybe hold a big sign that says "that's what you get!" or something. Hopefully my medical insurance has kicked in.

lol it was so funny. People here were so stoked for months leading up them them moving here. When the final word was made that we got them season tickets started selling like crazy. Lot of pissed off season ticket holders out there.

but come on peeps...did we really think that our first MAJOR sporting team we got would be like the freakin Lakers or something? Hecks na...we getting the bottom of the barral. Oh well at least we can still go watch the good teams play when they come to murder us.
