Considering going back to school.... Embry Riddle?

What can brown do for you?
I've been sitting around in Toledo Ohio for almost a week now and I hate wasting time like this, so I got to thinking about furthering my edumucation. I got my Bachelors a while back, and now am considering Masters/ PhD programs....

Embry Riddle has a Masters in Aeronautical Science program that I can do online and is 36 hours, at a surprisingly low cost of a little over 3 grand a year....it sounds too good to be true...

Anyone have any review about this program or have their 2 cents they want to chime in about?


They have a PhD program in Aviation Philosophy that looks like it would be interesting too, I would have to take 6 days off per year to attend campus but that looks doable as well... review on that as well?


I can't believe I'm already missing going to school, I believe my words after graduating college were, "Thank God no more school for me" and here I am...:buck:

I pretty much see 0 benefit in a Masters of Aeronautical Science vs say an MBA. An MBA would probably get you further as a back-up in case you got furloughed. Even if you wanted to move into the world of incompetent of airline management.

Aviation philosophy? WTF?

I'd say maybe the masters if you just have extra time/money and think you'd enjoy it. I bet you could get a list of their textbooks and save yourself about $2,900 if you just study the material on your own.
 
It's really just a case of severe boredom being out on the road, and heck, for 3 grand a year, why not?.... beats watching the same movies on the dumb dumb box on overnights!

Go for a non-aviation degree online. Sure, it'd be more difficult but you'd actually be learning things you don't already know. I think that would be more fun.

"So like you get up in the airplane and philosophize about stuff eh?"

"No I mostly read the USA Today."
 
If it were me, I'd just take the $3K a year and put it in an IRA or something. Buy some books on subjects you're interested in if you get bored on the road. My current topic of study is snakes and spiders around the world. Kills time, and you'd probably get a better ROI investing the $3K than spending it on a Masters in aviation.
 
Embry Riddle's PhD program is not yet accredited, although their website says that they expect it to be soon...

I would like to do their master's and PhD, but at this point, I'm just going to want to take a break from college after I finish my bachelors here at Penn State...

There's lots of ways to cure boredom for less than $3,000/yr.
 
Get yourself as Master's Degree... just not in any aviation related field. The best thing you could do for yourself at this point is to diversify. That is, unless you want to be an airport manager... even then an MBA would serve you better.

Diversification is my next step in life. I have no intentions on leaving the professional pilot career, but if for some reason I am forced to I want to be ahead of the game.

I can only IMAGINE what the course curriculum is for that degree......
 
I don't see much utility in a master's degree like that, unless you already have an MBA and just want to tack on an extra degree for the hell of it.

Even then, if a job requires an MBA, they're probably looking for someone with experience as well as the degree. If you've already got experience, then it might help you out. If all you've done is fly airplanes and go to college, odds are an MBA is just gonna be another expensive sheet of paper.
 
In general employers do not place a lot of value on a MBA unless it is from a top 50 school. And just to be clear, Embry Riddle absolutely does not qualify.

Man, that's pretty funny. Why would anyone do that? Is it going to be the new prereq to teach at Riddle?
