Antisocial Monster
Heya Doc,
I'm tossing this one out there because I've never had this happen to me, and what good is this place without an ear block thread every few weeks
On descent today, I ended up with a blocked left ear. My right ear, and quite frankly my sinuses, were clear and felt fine. I had been chewing gum on the way up and the way down, and once the pain started in my left ear I grabbed the Afrin. I got this in probably 10-15 minutes before we landed. Also I used Flonase this morning prior to the flight, and plan on using it again this evening before going to bed. I've also taken Advil Cold and Sinus since landing.
Once we were on the ground for probably 10 minutes, my left ear finally cleared, but while the pressure was relieved, whenever I'd move my jaw or swallow, it sounded as if there was a loud flapping noise in my ear, for lack of a better term. This flapping noise was also accompanied by some pain in my ear.
Even a few hours after the flight, if I pinch my nose a blow (forget what this is called) my left ear will pop, but it's painful.
The only reason I'm bringing this up is because I've never had any pain associated with having my ear clear before. Anytime my ear didn't want to clear and got blocked, by the time I was able to clear it, all I felt was relief.
So my questions to you are:
1. What caused the noise when my ear finally cleared? Fluid draining out of the ear?
2. Why the continued pain in my ear when I introduce pressure to it? Injury to the ear drum?
3. When should the pain go away, and if it doesn't, at what point should I go see a doctor?
4. Would it be a good idea to avoid airplanes until the pain goes away?
Thanks Doc!
