Would be a cool concept, but there's problems, IMO, with how to control the CG once the retardant is dropped. The project seems like a stretch to me.
Though they're going to have to do something now that the heavy airtanker contracts were cancelled. Front-runner for a new airtanker is the Lockheed S-3B Viking.

Hey Mike, do you know anything about the spray plane conversion the State Dept. was doing with the A-10? I know the Ayres Corp. had a few that they were modifying to replace the OV-10 Broncos that they currently use for their multi-engine spray work. I've talked with a few guys there and I know the project was begun but I've kinda lost track.
I think when the Ayres Corp. went bankrupt a few years back it kinda screwed up the program. They now use Air Tractor 802's to replace the -65 Thrushes.
By the way, does anyone fly into Albuquerque, NM often? I caught a connection there a while back and I saw two of the State Dept. Thrushes on the military ramp. Thought it was kind of odd since they operate out of Florida and S. America. Seems like Albuquerque would be out of the way if they were overland ferrying.

You're right on, the bankruptcy, combined with the DODs reluctance to release A-10s for the program, led to it's demise. Too bad.
You can see some of the State Dept OV-10s coming through Mesa (AZ) Falcon-Field too. Odd.
