Not too many melons bigger than mine (size 8 hat size) and I like mine. Had some nice long days wearing them and never had any discomfort.
 
I have many thousands of hours with the 13.4's and the headset incs. anr modules. Great combo for the money. I like them because a) they work, and b) they are indestructible - with the exception of the battery box which got replaced with one I made from radio shack crap to include a spare battery and selector switch.
And I too, have a friggin huge noggin.
 
Another vote for the 13.4's. It took me a while to decide which headset to get and I'm glad I chose the DCs. Only other headsets I've used are rentals, so dont have much to compare them to, but the 13.4s are really comfortable
 
Telex Stratus 30xt? I have the Stratus 50D and i would recommend that but it is out of your price range. the 50D is very comfortable and adjustable, the 30xt is pretty much the same thing w/ less batteries and no digital. The seals will also seal around sunglasses with no problems in cancellation. the Passive is as good as my Sigtronics S-68, with the ANR on the S-68 doesn't stand a chance and the S-68 is pretty much the same as a 13.4

I have a pretty huge noggin... melon on a toothpick.

Used lightspeeds for over 4 years and never once felt like I was in a vise.

i tried a pair of 30-3G's that belonged to a friend of mine and they were comfy so i bought a pair for myself, i though my head was going to explode from the extreme pressure!

Really, never heard of a complaint like that with those, I had the 20-3G which should be the same physical design with different electronics. I recently just moved up to the Zulu's
 
I had a pair of Lightspeed QFRXCc, Very quite for the price and came with nice bag and used 2 AA batterys, Payed around 325 for them. Great headset for the price but the ear seals are not the best, Maybe somebody makes better replacements. I have had 4 pairs of DC X11, and now on a pair of Bose X money well spent ! zulus are decent, but they are expensive and my telex works better. zulus are very comfortable which is probably why they don't work as well
 
I'll throw a vote in for the 13.4's. They make a really solid headset. The complaint I hear alot about is the weight, never really had a problem with it myself. I thought the passive reduction was great, but like the cool kids I wanted to try ANR. So instead of buying another headset all together I got the headsets inc ANR conversion. I couldnt be happier, battery life is great, I still have the great passive reduction, and if i need to I can take the battery box off for flying acro or whatever...Would I like a bose or nice ANR telex...sure, but there are other things I would like to spend a thousand dollars on right now.
 
I have headsetinc they are really good and affordable ANR. They started making self installed upgrades for passive headsets and now they also make a complete one for under 400, worth checking them out. I have a pair and really like them.

You also have the option of the Bose QC2 with the third party mike that looks really light for about 400 I think

I just started using the QC2 awhile back at the recommendation of... pretty much everyone. The whole setup is about $520, brand new.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about it but so far the pros still outweigh the cons. Works great in a jet; I've never used it in a prop. Since I do quite a bit of airlining, I can also unplug the mic and use it to drown out screaming crotch critters and stupid questions from Jethro.
 
I was over at the Pilot Shop by ADS today getting a chart, and they happen to be a Pilot Headsets dealer, so I tried on the PA-1779 mentioned earlier in this thread.

I'll admit. It's a slightly goofy-looking headset, and parts of the construction SEEM flimsy, but on close inspection, really aren't. There's a lot of plastic on it, but it's the super-durable kind of stuff...not really flimsy at all.

It is, without a doubt, the most comfortable headset I've ever put on. It fit just fine with my eyeglasses, too.

I wasn't able to try out the ANR, because they didn't have the batteries charged in any of the demo units, but I must say, with the built-in battery-pack, cell-music interface, stereo/mono settings, individual ear controls, and the fact that it's totally rechargeable...well, it's a heck of a lot of headset for the money. Lots of good features. I like that the battery pack is built in and not external.

Claims 31db of ANR. Passive is about equivalent to my AvComm headset - felt that way, but I can't say for
sure.

Another nice feature is that the mic boom is hinged in such a way that you can swing it forward and away from your mouth, rather than pivoting upward like on most headsets.

Pilot Shop was selling it for $469. 5-year warranty, and the store owner swears the owner of Pilot Headsets is wonderful to do business with. She sells a lot of them.

I am leaning slightly towards that model. I don't know why, it just seems like the right choice.
 
Telex you can wear the mic on either side of your head if you have a preference.

i like the right side as it gets the cords out of my way when instructing
 
Updated question.

How would you rate the microphone on your headset? How adjustable, etc.

I'm looking more specifically for information on the Pilot USA and Lightspeeds but any review will do.
