Writing Devices

So a native on here and I were discussing the pros and cons of different types of pens we use while flying. So....what kind of pens do you use that don't blow up?

Pilot G2's aren't for pilots, unless you want ink stains on your pants.

Zebra F-301. Has an extremely fine tip that works perfectly for small writing areas such as a log book. It also won't blow up.

I like the pilot g-2, but my students keep taking them from me, the zebra f-301 is a personal favorite though

Really?

What the hell are you doing to the pens to make them bleed?

What point are you using?

For the amount of writing we do, I only recommend .5 or .38. Anything larger and it will tend to blot - especially if you're one of these people who drag the pen instead of lifting it when you move from letter to letter.

:)

Gel ink for me though, I'm not a huge fan of ballpoints and can't stand the cheap ass hotel pens.

My mother in law is a psychiatrist. I loved getting her Valium and Xanex pens. Inevitably an FO would ask for a pen and I'd give them one with the comment that I'd gotten it from my doctor.

Zebra F-402 supremacy! Cheap, steel barrel, practically unbreakable, and plentiful in any office supply store of good repute.

(Gel pens are for office cows to write snarky notes on their meals in the breakroom refrigerator ... sorry surreal, but everyone knows that. :) )

I loved my Zebra F-605. Don't know if they're still made anymore but I loved the flat black barrel.

That being said, any hotel pen will do... the pens from the MSN hotel were the best, cuz they had a clicker!

I've had probably 3 of the G2s blow up on me in the last two years. So now I just use whatever I find laying around.

Pilot Easytouch MED Doesn't leak, easy click action and fits in the shirt pocket quickly.

Where'd everybody get the zebra pens?

I probably got mine (the F-605) at Target or Office Max 15 years ago. Was looking up to see if they're available or not anymore, and they were discontinued 10 years ago. Can still buy F-series refills for them though. Used to wear one with my uniform every day (we HAD to have a pen on us, as we did pax counts for W&B at Eagle), never blew up on me.

I have 3 of them, they're the best! The barrel is coated with a flat (as in not shiny), almost rubbery, black material, and the clip held to my shirt/vest without fail. They're heavy and have a nice solid feel to them. Now that I think about it though, wearing that pen where I did was probably not the brightest idea, as in a crash it could have stabbed me right in the lung...

I figured that'd be the #1 requirement for a regional pilot. Collectively, of course. Not specifically you.

Yeah, some guys don't like quality. Or they really just have a fetish for snagging cheap hotel pens.

Been writing with them for over 15 years - I just can't stand the feel of anything else.

Bingo. My logbook is done with a G2, but no way in heck do I carry them in my pockets. I've had one blow up in a pocket once. Once was enough. Now, I just carry the hotel brand of choice that I was in for inflight writing.

Pretty much anywhere that has school or office supplies.

I wasn't a big fan of the fat rubber finger grip. I also was writing one day and the pen snapped in half. The F-301 hasn't had that problem for me. The F-301 is also smaller so it goes into a breast pocket easily.
