Sitting here in Manassas, stuck in the hotel because of weather I've been browsing the whole interwebs and watching daytime tv, but just re-checking the weather I noticed the winds aloft back home! I don't think I've ever seen them that strong! This is def one hell of a system. If anyone is flying today going south to north, I'd imagine some of you are getting insane groundspeeds!

Yeah, coming out of LNS headed to BWI about 3 hours ago we were doing 61 knots over the ground, indicating 130 KIAS in the climb with the nose to the wind. The way back was a riot, but the way down sucked.

That would be fun to take people up in, fly along at 60kts and see the ground going backwards!! Or, from the ground the plane going backwards. "Martha come quick, planes got reverse now!"

Looks very nasty. I've been seeing lots and lots of pireps for severe turbulence. check this one out! I swear I saw another out of ACY of a 737 reporting 96kt winds at 3000ft!

Saw something like this last year (the upswing right along the coast) heading from PHL to HVN in a -100. Groundspeed was 411. I've only broken 400 in the dash 2 other times and those were at 250; 401 and 402 in a -300.

I was flying at both of those times, and honestly, it wasn't that bad. Light chop with occasional moderate turbulence around BWI. There was a pretty hefty cell sitting just east of BWI at around 1010 local, so that may explain the severe-extreme report. There was certainly a fair amount of shear in the climb and descent but it didn't even knock over my coffee. ;)

We caught one of these systems out west a few years ago...going from North to South. We took off out of Redmond, OR headed for LAX, that flight blocks at 2:20-2:30...we made it in 1:36...fastest I've ever been flying an airplane.

We flew oit of KBWI this am in an Excel (0730) and it was gusting to 35-40 and we had a 140 knot headwind heading to VJI. It was hard to find smooth air needless to say.

yep. winds here at KLIT were pretty nasty the whole day. @ 3000 Flying westbound i was getting 55 knots of ground speed in a C172, Eastbound 140 across the ground.

Coming into IXD one night from the NW we had 205kts across the ground in an arrow...yeah big tail wind is the only way an arrow will see those numbers:D

You're braver than I, sir. I canceled the first trip to BWI yesterday morning (0620 departure) because of that weather. 70 knots up at 3000', gusting 40 on the ground in BWI with 500-600' ceilings (ILS 15L mins are 400'). Just not worth putting our passengers on our martini shaker 402s in that. We could have done it, but they'd have never ever flown on us again.

You guys actually have passengers on those? j/k

I was vectoring guys for the ILS 15R at BWI about 0200 local yesterday morning and an AAL told me the winds at 3000 were 180 @ 95. I had to start the dogleg turn at about a 5 mile base because they were swinging so much. They were showing 330 across the ground on the downwind even though I had slowed them to 210 and between 90 and 110 kts on the final (Jets not not props).

Even had one SWA showing 80 kts on a 5 mile final, think thats the first time I have seen that.
