Worried about your family

Hi all. I am the future 777 captain. I am on my way to the CPL, but I always wondered about what it is like to be a pilot with a family. My father has been a contract expat pilot since before I was born, which naturally resulted in many months at a time away from home. Naturally, he was always concerned with the well being of his family when he was away. Luckily, in the end all turned out well.

How do you guys handle it?

Well, call every few days and check in!

I think if you plan on getting married, you're really going to need an independent spouse.

I know a guy whose wife, even though he was on the road in Europe, would call about every 3 hours because something was going wrong at home that was fairly solvable without a $1/minute telephone call.

This is assuming A LOT but co-dependence + airline job = trouble.

Lemme restate that, his WIFE would call him about every three hours... Sorry about the confusion in the initial response.
 
A lot of trust/faith that everythingis going to be alright. My wife is very independent. She has her own business, and is also a dancer at Disney World. That woman can fix her own flat and can do almost anything around the house without my help. We talk on my downtimes while on the road which keeps our line of communication open. I can't stress that anymore. Make sure you and your family are talking.

:yeahthat: My dad works a two weeks on/two weeks off shift, and luckily my mom is very independent and can do alot of stuff around the house(she still hasnt figured out our organized mess in the garage though;)). I can see how it can cause major problems if a spouse is not independent at all.
