Why Lear and not Cessna

Why own or operate a small to mid size Lear 24 -50 that require 2 crew when you can have a Cessna 501's and that only requires one on payroll?

I'm sitting here and thinking about it hard. Other than climb out how does the Lear out perform the Cessna 525's to the point of justifying another payroll employee.

A guy I know real well is looking at buying a close to defunk charter company. Problem I have with it is the cost structure. Curious as to why people would operate Lears.

Well, if he's only planning on transporting himself.....

I'm pretty sure Part 135 calls for 2 pilot crews minimum....

Well, in the 525B we're lucky to pull .66 at 410. In the 525A we were right up on the barberpole at 450, but I think that was still only .7.

I'm pretty sure the lear will go past a Cj in slow flight. The 500-series (the 501) is just as bad.

Other than that, the fuel burns on the Cj can't be beat. We get ~700pph at 410 if we're really pushing the power up. We've seen it as low as 550pph. Those are total numbers, not per side.

Also, the runway numbers in the Cj are nice. Typical landing distances are under 3000' and takeoff is close to the same. If you need to get in/out of a short field with a full load, the Cj will do it. Not sure about the lear, but from talking to others, I would guess not.

If you can afford a 7-10 Million dollar airplane, the extra payroll for a second pilot should not be a concern.

With that, I say go Lear, but I am a little biased....

It will be for both.

I'm aware of 135 mins.

I'm not as educated as I would like to be on corporate aircraft.

The Lear 45 will burn less than 1000 pph at .79 cruising at FL 450...

The 40XR will get slightly better speed and fuel consumption but makes it to the upper 40's with no problem.

I wonder what makes you Bias.:D

Tell me, why do you like the Lear so much? Apart from the smart alec answer, "because it pays the bills."

Damn, how did you know?

Was my plane parked at their ramp in KSLC?

They have some lears but might be leasing a Cessna 525 or two, so Im saying why not keep the Lears and add to them or replace them.

We're trying to come up with some costs etc.

Is he looking at multiple models of Lear? Lots of differences between them so it would help to know which ones you want to compare.

35's and I believe a 55 and a 60. Not sure if the 60 is still around. Mostly 35A.

Who else runs Lears on a ticket in Utah. Besides I think we have a couple of nice AMF lears for sale

Hold on wanting to buy the operation or just the plane for personal use?

And make me your Chief Pilot!

We already own a ticket, problem is all of the helo stuff is on it and they have had lots of accidents. Not sure how hard it is to add fixed wing aircraft to it etc.

Single pilot ops are allowed under 135 in certain circumstances, autopilot blah blah blah.

BUT...No insurance company will cover an outfit that has four multi-milliondollar clients in the back with only one pilot up front.
