Why Doesn't ATP Take GI Bill Benefits?

So, I Came across this:

ATP has no plans to offer a VA-approved flight training program in the future.

Just curious as to the reasoning.

Under the Post 9/11 GI Bill, veterans could get $10,000 per year for up to three years to use for flight training. If used in conjunction with the Mountain State University degree program (that has already been set up by ATP), veterans would receive $17,500, an annual book stipend and a housing allowance for 3 years. Seems like a "no brainer" to me; ATP would get about $50k per veteran.

Thoughts...?

i think its cause the GI bill requires you to attend a part 141 school which ATP is not.

The old, "Montgomery" GI Bill requires part 141. That's not true under the post 9/11 (chapter 33) rules...

Also, isn't ATP's Jacksonville Campus part 141? Why can't the veterans use the GI Bill at the Jacksonville campus?

Be that as it may, under the new GI Bill, part 61 can be used for flight training and since ATP has a degree program through MSU, they'll pay the veteran $17,500 per year, plus a book stipend, plus a housing allowance. Without a degree program, the veteran would still get $10,000 per year.

I know this is a hot topic for you Flush but if the company doesn't want to receive VA money that is there right. No law requires a company to work with the VA.

Maybe not...

There's also no law against asking for an explanation as to why they don't accept the benefits we've earned. ;)

ATP Daytona Beach is the part 141 location, however the part 141 program is for international students only.

Could have something to do with the fact that the new GI bill will make it very hard for vets to get flight training. The amount of money they pay to private institutions will not cover enough. 17000 per year is not enough for you to finish up your flight training

Maybe...

...but also consider that if you get the allowance for housing, you also get an additional $800-$2200 a month for 9 months of the year. If the student was able to keep his/her job and roll that money into more training, they would definitely have enough. My BAH here is $2175 x 9 months = $19,575 x 3 year = $58,725 + $52,500 (for 3 years of $17,500 worth of benefits) = $111,225

I'm pretty sure that $111,225 is enough to get you through.

I don't know your situation but what about Embry or UND? Aerosim claims to be approved to use VA money for flight training.

For any of those other options, I'd have to move. I currently own a house in Long Beach and there is an ATP campus less than a mile from my door. At this point in my life, moving is not an option...

Im going to SIU on gi bill and it covers flight plus tuition
Also not an option for me. SIU is approximately 2,000 miles away...

I imagine it boils down to it is too much hassle for them.
I really hope that's not the case. I know a lot of people (myself included) that had to endure quite a bit of "hassle" while serving their country. I really hope ATP has a better reason than a little bit of "hassle". Besides, what business model supports the theory that it's too much work to make more money? How does that work...?

Seems like that's exactly it.

The 90-day and 10-month would only be paid for at $10k a year? Less than 1/5th the total cost of the training. Even the MSU flight training is complete in 15 months, still not close to covering the costs.

Not if taken in conjunction with the MSU degree program.

See post 9 above:

Is $37,075 for 3 years enough to get you somewhere? ...total of $111,225?

It doesn't seem like the total dollar amount is a problem, it's that you can't get the money fast enough. The flight training portion of the MSU program does not last 3 years. It's 15 months from zero time, less coming in with a private. They would be giving you $50k+ in flight training with ~$37k in funding. I don't even think the MSU program is available in California.

I was a CFI on less than 17k, are you sure about that?

But yes - for a flight school out to make easy money, not such a great deal for them.

No!!! Are you sure about what you are saying???
You are claiming to get 250 for the commercial plus your CFI for less than 17000$? That is less than 68$/h and if that is with an instructor i must say i am very surprised...

Even so, the $17,000 is going to help. Veterans could take out student loans to cover the rest, if need be but we shouldn't have to deal with flight schools turning up their noses at us. That's pretty unprofessional and in this case, very un-American. Personally, I find it despicable...

I totally agree with that, i wish they would have made it more fair between the private and public schools.
They lowered the private to 17000 and upped the public (do not recall the exact figure) way to much
