Why are some speeds listed in CAS?

I occasionally come across some aircraft manuals or checklists which list V speeds in KCAS. Since, as far as I know, CAS can't be read off the airspeed indicator, but is usually listed in the POH in a table with equivalent IAS, why would a manual or checklist show something a speed in CAS rather than IAS?

Older aircraft (pre 1975 I think) showed airspeeds in CAS on the airspeed indicator (usually in MPH). I was reviewing the Instrument oral exam guide (the little red book) and came across this little tidbit.
