Its incredible to see how some versions of the Ekranoplan have 8 engines. But with all the drag they have during ¨takeoff¨¨ I imagine you need tons of power to get that thing only a couple of feets of the ground. So hence the 8 tons of fuel sucking engines...... Crisis.. What crisis??
I bet that thing sucks twice as more fuel than some jetliners the same sice, and it barely gets off ground effect..
So .... I hear Family airlines its opening a JFK base for the Ekranoplane for its JFK-MIA-SJU service. and they are hiring!! ...
hahaha :P

Btw: what an ugly plane :)

I wonder how it would be different if they outfitted that thing with modern day engines, if it would prove to be useful and actually get out of ground effect?

The Russians have often ventured into unusual configurations and while in the US unusual stuff is tested via computer simulation, the Russians would actually build it.

The Ultimate was the Caspian Sea Monster (US name) and they were not intended to FLY but rather remain in ground effect. Some considerations were to use them for coastal assaults. As you can see, they built various configurations.

They are or at least were laid up and could be seen in google earth.
