It was raining really hard (didn't show up too well though) in flight but not on the ground.

Hmmmm, weird. I've never been in precip that was bad enough to warrant wipers in flight. But I suppose if you're looking for the runway, you don't want to take any chances.

The RVR was 4000+.
As far as the rain... Yeah, we just had them on to try to find the runway. Turns out we didn't really need them by the time we got low enough to see that lights, but the last thing I wanted to do was fly into heavy rain just as we were breaking out and lose sight of the runway and have to go around. Once we were in the clear and down on the ground they were more annoying than helpful. I suppose I could have waited to turn them on until right above mins, but that's one more thing I'd be focusing on inside the plane instead of looking around outside to try to find the runway.
