Which headset is the best?

Hey everyone, I'm new here and need some advice. My bf's birthday is coming up and I was planning on buying him a new headset, but am not sure which one to get him. He recently borrowed a friends Lightspeed Zulu and loved them, but my thoughts are if I am going to spend $900 for those, why not just spend $1000 and get the Bose. I've heard that the Bose are better and was just hoping that someone out there would be able to help me. I want to get him a set that's going to last for several years. Also, any thoughts on the Beyerdynamic HS 600 DANR? Thanks for your help everyone!!!

David Clark H10-13.4, they will give you the most bang for your buck. They are the benchmark of quality headsets. If you're looking for something with active noise reduction, then Bose or Lightspeed are nice from what I hear, but MUCH more expensive. Whatever you do, don't get the David Clark X11's.

Headsets are a very personal thing. I used to use a Lightspeed Twenty 3G and loved it, and if I had to get another headset for regular use I'd grab a Lightspeed Zulu. In the jet I used a Telex 750 with ear plugs, and that worked pretty well for the application.

Point being, he needs something that fits HIS head well. The Zulu might, and the Bose might not. If you know he loves the Zulu, grab that. I don't think the Bose is any better of a headset.

I rant a lot about the Zulu's. I love the blue tooth feature on the Zulu because I could listen to my music on my Verizon voyager and make calls from it. Also the front row center button rocked my world, it felt like I was at a concert. The only thing I didn't like about the Zulu is when you were doing a run up check if you had the windows open it makes this annoying wind noise inside your headset, but otherwise great headset.

I personally recommend (or endorse :)) almost everything David Clark makes. My 1999 H10-13.4 has seen some abuse but never disappointed me.

Generally speaking the best headset you could possibly buy is the one that fits your head, is not too loose, not too tight, doesn't need a lot of attention and lasts long enough to come to appreciate it.
That, and toothpaste (for cleaning the plugs) has done the trick for me.

Try em on, wear em on long flights and make up your mind from there.
It's all about your ears and head.

I have the BOSE.. and let me tell ya... 12 months, zero interest... monthly payment of 80 bucks... cant beat that for what you get. ANNDDDDDD you CAN.. (Cause i have one) get an adaptor for your cellphone/ipod etc etc.. regardless of what people say.. I HAVE IT and use it every change I get.. BOSE Quality and BAttery life is amazing!

And you could get a great deal over on the trading post on a pair of never worn Bose X!!! Sorry, shameless plug but I need to sell these things!

Get a Telex Stratus 30XT, they are better than even the more expensive Bose and Lightspeed headsets. VERY comfortable to wear because of the ComfortCam they put in. Awesome sound quality through the music input and cellphone interface also. I know I love mine!

Are you seriously telling me to go finance a stupid headset? How much are they? $1000? Holy cow! Do people finance their E6B's too?
:D

j/k

Whatever you do, DO NOT get a David Clark! The only thing going for them is their durability. Their ANR is primitive at best, their comfort is atrocious, and their customer service is matched by pretty much every other brand.

How is the passive sound quality when the ANR is off? I'm not sure if it was on the previous model, but some people said if the battery went dead it was hard to hear ATC. I was hoping that's not true though.

If he liked the zulus then get him the zulus

Also never get Bose! I was turned of when one of their aviation reps wouldn't let me try it with the battery off. So I went to the tent next to theirs and bought a nice new Pilot Avionics PA-1779T and have been very happy with it. Internal battery and if the battery does go out (usually doesn't because of the long battery life) it still has a ton of passive noise canceling!

The Bose X is horrid when turned off, but you can still hear ATC. You shouldn't ever run out unexpectedly though, it gives you hours of warning, even using rechargeable batteries.

Buy him a steak, give him a BJ, and put the $1000 in gold.

Failing that, buy used. I love old crappy DCs because they're bulletproof and eternally supported. Shiny is nice right up till you're working for a living and the technological marvel poops the bed.
