Where\'s Snow?

Just thought I'd give you guys a little update on things, I haven't posted anything on my experences in CFI class because we're not really learning a lot of new material, just mainly review of stuff we should already know and learning how to teach it to others. First week did go into how to teach and a fairly in depth look into aerodynamics, but other than that it's been a lot of review and nothing worth posting methinks.

I'm putting off my comerical single add on for now as I was swamped with reading to do and had a headcold. I might start it before class finishes, I'm undecided, a few have done it at another FBO, but I'd just rather do it here part 141. You only save a few hundred bucks and in the greater scheme of things that's only loose change. I'd rather be all Flightsafety 141 trained.

I did the 'Advanced Systems Introduction' today in the Saab 2000 Lvl D simulator. Which was FREE

I got about an hour's worth of flying, learning how to chase the flight director and a little on how to change the displays, set radios, FMS etc Also did a engine failure on take off and a single engine ILS landing, it's a prick at first but once your trimed it's not too bad and if you keep the flight director pinned it will take you right down to the runway. Quite a bit of fun and it's gotten me motivated again, think I might go buy that airline transport aircraft systems book now! The level of automation is really cool, it auto-feathers, yaw dampeners elminate use of pedels (after triming), even when hand flying with an engine out! Totaly cool!

Also for those who are curious I finished up the whole CIME program with about 167hrs, that's just 7hrs over the mins, I can account about 3hrs over a few really long lessons but the rest must have crept in there after private somewhere (I was right on 35hrs at private) As for price, I was within $1000 of the quoted price, plus that includes all supplies, some of which I got were more expensive than usual (eg I got top of the line stuff and extra books not required or included in quoted price) So all in all I'm very happy with the training I've recived here and would recomend it to anyone considering a career in aviation.

Keep the shiny side up!

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Finished all my CFI ground school last week and had the FAA test on the Wednesday just gone. Went well got a 92 with is about average for me and the FAA tests, for some reason I tend to do better on the FlightSafety tests than on the FAA ones, probably because of the funky wording they use sometimes, not exsactly sure what they're asking, and often it's more the matter of 'what's the answer the FAA is looking for?' rather than the realistic answer. *sigh* Oh well.

Had my first flight in the Arrow today. First impressions is that its a bit of a let down after flying the Seminole, sure it's got 200hp but that retract gear and constant speed prop has it's toll on the power to weight ratio, so in climb it's not much better than a Cadet with a longer ground roll to boot! All the speeds and power settings are new to me, but once I get that all down I should be ok, the procedures and checklist are simular to the other piper aircraft.

My comerical manouvers are a little rusty but for my first try in a new aircraft I think I did pretty well and was mostly within PTS. There's only 4 lessons before the checkrides so this should go very quickly indeed.

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Well my Comerical single add on is all done with, I went from 1st lesson to final checkride in just 9 days, including the weekend! Now I'll start the flying portion of my CFI training, this time moving into the right seat of the Cadet and then Arrow. I'll be meeting with my CFI instuctor for the first time this afternoon, I think this will be the first and only lesson I won't need to be 'teaching' as such as it is a 3hr introduction breif. Hum, maybe I should start a new thread? .... darn where did the poll option go? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Ah well a simple yay or nay will do.

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Had my first flight flying right seat today. Not as bad as I invisioned once I got the taxing view point down I was able to transfer that to the landing. Although I did reach for the breaker panel a few time while doing power changes and pushing on the wrong side for the 'press to talk' button. Plus trying to look at the instruments durring a steep turn was really weird. We didn't really get to go any pattern work today due to the lingering low clouds, so we'll get that next time.

Re: Where\'s Snow?

For steep turns look at the lines on the bottom half of the attitude indicator. There is a line that corresponds to 45 degrees. You'll get used to it.

Better yet, don't look at the instruments at all!

At this point in your training you should be looking outside almost all the time. When I couldn't break the habit of stareing at the guages, my instructor covered up all of them.

Try it some time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Where\'s Snow?

I agree with the whole looking outside thing but it's a little hard to maintain altitude with outside references alone.

Did a few ground refs today, as well as more take off and landings. I think I must have gotten the supercharged cadet today (joke) because we only needed 2100rpm to keep 95kts instead of the 2250 and at full throttle level flight at 2500ft we were able to reach 135kts! Which is really good considering the max cruise is about 119kts at 6500ft. Also got like 1000fpm climb after take off, I was impressed to say the least!

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Wednesday 20th October,

Hey all, after all the delays I finally got my CFI last Friday! Will interview and do CFII in November so hopefully I'll be in the next stan after November, January perhaps? I'll keep you posted. CFI checkride was one of the harder checkrides I've done, least in length, both mock and checkride were close to 5hrs long each. I got a 85/85, not perfect but as they say a CFI certificate gives you the right to learn to be a CFI, practice makes perfect, so who wants to be my first student?

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Thursday, 4th November

Well I've had my first two interviews, seemed to go well, got thrown a few sample questions of what to expect after my presentation which is next Thursday before a selection board I guess you could call it. All this is durring my CFII ground school but hopefully it should be mostly review anyhow but I might glance through my instrument stuff this weekend just to refresh my memory. After that I'll have to shoot some approachs in the Frasca and hopefully I'll know if I get hired by the end of the week after that. Either way I'll be doing the flying portion of my CFII week after next. That's all to report for now.

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Thursday 11th November

Well just had my presintation this morning, seemed to go well, I knew the topic well and the 15mins went quickly. Sure relived to have it over with however, the 24hrs leading upto it was the most stressful but once I was in there talking I was less nervious. Now I just need to do some study for tommarow's CFII final and then enjoy the weekend! Frasca ride will be next week somtime so I'll need to do my 5hrs and get back upto speed on my seminole IFR proceedures. So not out of the woods just yet!

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Tuesday, 7th December

Hey I'm still here, currently working on my CFII, should be finished next week sometime, hopefully will get the checkrides done before Christmas. If so I'll do another presintation and see if I can't still get into the January stan class. I think I approached the presintation the wrong way and got a little too technical, was all technically correct but teaching method was a little lacking. Oh the Frasca ride went great so I actually got offered the first officer internship, so at least that's somthing. My teaching method seems to be improving so I should be better prepared next time. Stay tuned...I'll keep you posted.

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Hey Snow, congrats on your successful Frasca! Do you want to take that internship opportunity? I was yesterday at the meeting with Mr. Wagner and he says that the companies are looking for graduates that went through the program.

Do you know if International students are allowed to get into the program, provided that they pass the security background checks?

YV.

Re: Where\'s Snow?

I was wondering that too. Since it requires working with an airline is it open for ibnternational students as well or wat ?

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Hum, I have a feeling you need to be a US citizen to enter any lvl D simulator nower days. Fortunatly for me I have duel citizenship so that isn't a problem. I feel the internship would be a better oportunity after having some duel given time, so if I get the instructor position here I might save if for later.

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Don't take this the wrong way, as I think you are from another country (Australia?), but I have noticed that you consistently use duel instead of dual in your post.

Duel - A contest with deadly weapons between two people to settle a point of honor.

Dual - Denoting two persons or things. Having two sets of controls, one of which is used by the instructor.

Re: Where\'s Snow?

Foreign nationals are able to train in the US on large aircraft (over 12,500lbs), and many currently do so. The only problem is that they have to be fingerprinted and have a background check done by the TSA. The hitch is the fingerprints. You either have to fly to the US and have them taken, or pay an authorized US company to fly someone out to your location and have them fingerprint you.

It is possible to start ground school while waiting on the background check, but you cannot get into the Sim until given the ok by the TSA. So some come and get fingerprinted and start groundschool while waiting for their clearance. The TSA has so many days to complete the check and it is possible to start training after the 'waiting period' if the training center is not contacted by the TSA. (The TSA is supposed to contact the training center if the training request is denied.)

Re: Where\'s Snow?

*Hope this does not sound the wrong way*
Can you post a pic of yourself? I have been reading your diares for a long time now and I usually like to imagine the face of the person while I read the post. : P
