Where do I begin?

I just signed up for a gym membership because I am not going to be getting the exercise I was with my last job. I am trying to lose 50lbs. The treadmill is out because I have bad knees. But I do love riding the bicycle. Then I would like to work out the upper body too. Thanks for the advice.

Kettlebells are probably the best for full body workout/fat burning combo.

Losing 50lbs on cardio machines is next to impossible unless you spend 10+ hours a week on it. But if you want a full body cardio machine see if they have a VersaClimber.

Thanks. I dont plan on losing 50lbs just with cardio. That is more for me to get into better shape.

Elliptical is pretty easy on the knees - and you can burn a stupid amount of calories doing it.
Thats true. I like the elliptical machine.

When I cut sugar almost completely out of my diet I lost 10-15 lbs quickly. That included bread, pasta, cereals etc. The first week or so of "detoxing" sucks, but after that it was no problem. The upside is that you can eat bacon and eggs for breakfast and have a steak for dinner. Just don't skimp on fruit and veggies.

Or hide your car keys, and walk or bicycle everywhere you go. You will lose weight pretty quickly no matter what you eat.

Lifestyle depending. Anything that creates a calorie debt and supplies enough good calories to keep you from binging is good. I lose weight when I take breaks from running.

Thanks for the input. I have drastically reduced my sugar intake already. Now just need to add exercise to it.

I'm not a fitness expert but like many of us, keep myself in shape, have had to lose and gain weight. This advice is awful to be honest. A good search of how to lose weight, via diet and exercise is all over the net. Not all body's are the same, some take more or less different levels of exercise, diet, etc....also depends on the amount of being overweight. There are great apps out there that allow to you monitor your food intake, reduce calories while offering different types of routines to reduce weight, increase muscle mass, etc. I'm not a runner, I lift weights and it works well for me...heavy weights at times. The 5x5 mentioned above I did use last time I was in Afghanistan and it worked well, but I reduced calories (note, hard to have a good diet here so I reduced calories only) and stuck to the 5x5 regiment for a few weeks then moved on to different routines.

Here I am post rotation..

Ha, I wish, I'm no Arnold though we take selfies...not for look at me but it's easier to see gains. So try that and see what happens.

Absolutely not the case. Cardio is for your heart. If you want to lose weight you need to count calories or go low carb.

How many fat folks do you see finishing marathons in 5 hours or doing triathalons?

If you exercise more and regularly, you will lose weight.

If you exercise a lot, consuming enough calories will be your problem.

Or go with a solid diet of whiskey and cigarettes. Have heard that works too.

I see skinny people running marathons. Who wants to be skinny? Lean with muscle mass is what I go for.

I highly doubt people will go from 50 pounds overweight to running so much they're calorie deficient. Ain't gonna happen. People are fat for a reason.

Losing weight is a complete lifestyle change. Takes a lot of restraint to eat to live and not live to eat.

people are fat because they eat more calories than they need.

Exercise more, eat less. Actually doing that is not easy for most americans.

What works for me personally is incorporating exercise into things I would do anyway- so more walking and biking, less driving. I don't worry about food, and never feel guilty about not clearing my plate.

It really is simple math. use more calories than you take in, and you will lose weight. same way my bank account has been lately. you can make it as easy or as complicated as you want from there. FWIW I agree with @drunkenbeagle. I rode my bike to work last year and weighed about 30 lbs less than I do today. stay out of the car and off the couch, make sure the food you eat is real and not processed, and watch the liquid calorie intake.

At one point I was very concerned about losing weight for an athletic event, and I used the myfitnesspal app on my phone to track calories for a couple of months. Its good to track what you eat for at least a few weeks just to give yourself a good feel for how many calories the stuff you usually eat really have, and you can make informed decisions going forward. In my case I gave up soda since a Coke was about as many calories as a beer, and I knew which I'd rather sacrifice the calories on!
