When to do the ATP written?

Just curious to know people's thoughts on when an appropriate time to get the ATP written out of the way is. Should I get a certain number of hours in the logbook first? Or is it nice to get it out of the way early-- even if taking the checkride might be a year and a half down the road?

Take the written within 24 months of taking your ATP practical. That way you won't have to take the written twice.

the wriiten is good for 2 years i believe. if your flying for a 121, 135, or serve as a check pilot you can still take the practical if your written is expired.

So there's really no disadvangate to taking the ATP written even if I only have 400 hours at the moment, provided I get up to 1,500 within the next two years? Or would it be smarter to wait until I have a thousand or so hours?

i really don't see any disadvantage in a taking it or at least starting to study for it now. with 400 tt right now you should easily have 1500 in two years and/or be flying 135 or 121. i sure wouldn't put yourself out trying to get it done right now though.

Take the written just before:
1. You start sending out resumes to part 135 or 121 companies.
or
2. You take your ATP practical.

Out of curiosity, when would you start sending out resumes to 121 and 135 operators? I've heard people say start sending them out at 700 hours regardless of what company minimums are in order to get your name into their database. Is that just a waste of time? Or worthwhile?

I started sending them out after I got 1000 hours (just recently).
If you're within 80% of the minimums, send a resume unless the specifically request no resumes that don't meet the minimums.

There's nothing wrong with sending out resumes before you meet the minimums (unless a company specifically says not to). I would advise people to start pushing them out at about 1000 hours, and update at least once every three months to let the company know you're interested.

Object lesson? I start class at Chautauqua soon, and I STILL don't meet all of their advertised minimums. And there were guys in my interview group who had less time than I did!

If I may ask, FL270, how much time did you have when you get your interview w/ Chautauqua? And, how much time did others in your class have?

Would anyone else mind sharing how many hours it took before they were picked up by a 121 or 135 operator? And also, when did you start sending resumes out?

I got hired flying Beech 1900's part 135 with 1130/45. I got hired to fly a CRJ-700 part 121 with 1670/500.

The part 135 job was in April of 2003, and I am currently in training for the 121 job.
