Yeah def not like today...

I dont know what youre complaining about , we have some of the same Flight Attendants working today! :)

Although it was nothing like the "golden days," I even remember the 90s on most legacy carriers being a whole different level than the past ten years (with maybe the late 90s as an exception); Free hot meals, better coach seat pitch, even little things like free card sets in first class, and of course plastic wing pins for the kids (I always loved getting those).

Hot damn! I would pack myself in that flight attendants carryon! I don't think I have had one sub 30 decent looking FA in any commercial airline I have ever been on. Maybe I have bad luck?

90's lets talk about the 70s. That was flying.. DC-8 to HNL....

I remember 1980 traveling standby on Eastern (of course I was 5) with my family, we waited in the coach class waiting area and were served drinks like at a restaurant. This was at Logan Intl. oh yeah and my dad always brought me and my brother on a trip behind the scenes at the airport while waiting to see if we would get on (never had a problem until the mid 1980s).

*edit -- never had a problem flying standby

Great group of photos, but should be titled "when flying was glamorous."

Flying is always fun.

*shrug*. Yeah it was nice for those who could afford it. We've all reaped the dubious benefits of the walmartification of aviation...I'm talking to you Mr. 250 hour RJ pilot.

I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of reasonable mean between pan am clipper and ryanair, but you won't catch me crying because the proles are allowed to trouble the skies with their gauche presence. Those trailerparkers pay you.

Airport security is such a pain that sometimes I don't even feel like taking a trip because I know I'm going to have to go through it. I miss the days when planes were looked at with admiration instead of as potential weapons.

Ernest Gann thought the introduction of jetliners in the 60s was the end of glamor in air travel. I guess opinions vary. :D I would have to agree with him to a certain extent, though. A lot of the flying boats and land based piston ships had state rooms and/or sleeping booths, lounges, full lavatories, you name it. I would have loved to have flown then.

Thanks for posting - cool site.
My grandparents would take me to Gatwick's observation lounge when I was a boy to watch the planes takeoff and land. The sounds and smells were all very dramatic and there would always be about half a dozen teenage kids listening to the pilots/Atc chatter on air band receivers. Don't see that anymore :(

The concorde tribute on the same site is also pretty cool too!
