What\'s up Restricted areas.

Anyone on here flown to the outer banks from the South? I am looking at flying to Ocracoke in a couple weeks. The sectional is loaded with restricted areas and warning areas from Cherry Point MCAS all the way up to near Virginia. I thought about flying inland around the restricted areas and then heading back over to Nags head but that sure seems like a waste of gas when I am trying to go quite a bit south of Nags head. Anyways, just wondering.

Just got back from that area on vacation for a week...

I can't exactly attest to flying in from outside the area as I only went up for a while departing from Manteo.. but there for sure seemed to be quite a few who I talked to passing thru the area or flying in for the week so it can't be impossible..

Just gotta really do your planning and watch for all those lovely restricted areas as you mentioned ... there's quite a few of em' !!

I'm sure it is possible. You are allopwed to fly through warning area's correct? That is what it looks like will be required. The nthe only issue is that some of the restricted areas stick a couple miles out to sea. If the cloud gods allow, I suppose I can fly high enough to glide into land if the engine fails, or we can get some lifejackets. Once you are over to the outerbanks themselves, it looks like a nice area to fly.

You are, but it isn't adviseable.

Warning areas are areas that can not be designated "restriced" because they are in international airspace.

However, the same things that go on in restricted areas (missle shoots, gunnery pratice, ect.) go on in warning areas.

So the US govt can't stop you from flying there, but you might find yourself in the middle of a missle shoot. Not good.

Many restricted areas are only active at certain times of the day, or on weekdays only, or at certain altitude ranges. If you look at the tabs on the sectional chart, you may find that the route you want is doable depending on the time/day/altitude. Always advisable to be on flight following whenever you're near them regardless.

I've flown thru my share of MOAs do do some time-critical aerial photography, too (not the best thing to do). If they're cold, no problem. If they are hot, ATC will tweak out and try to vector you around; if you refuse the vectors and you fly into them, ATC will terminate your flight following. Those things can go back and forth from hot to cold at any time, so again, flight following is key.

And anyway... just head up the coast... you don't need to be that far out to sea when just heading out to the outer banks... something about ditching in the ocean I wouldn't feel comfortable about.

Besides, YOU know the missle tests, CIWS firings, and military games we play in the VA Capes and Cherry Point Op Areas...That's what you'll be heading through... I wouldn't want to be in the middle of them...


Take the scenic, safer route.

, however most of ours were done down South by P.R.

If shooter were flying a little more North up by the VA beach area, I would also have to add small-arms fire to the mix of things to watch out for.

I remember whenever we used the outdoor ranges at Little Creek for weapons qualifications, the range masters had to post safety watches on the beach to warn if any boats or planes would be passing anywhere nearby.

Everything is continious operations in that area. I flew up to Ocracoke from Florida about 3 months ago. I cancelled IFR when I got up near Bogue MCAF and made it over waters to VPATO int. If you stay to the right of the banks it'll take you to Ocracoke and out of the restricted areas. Stop in Beaufort for fuel, nice airport.
