What's the point of this? (multiple glass with portable GPS)

Isn't that 496 a little overkill?

Re: What's the point of this?

Maybe they move it from to plane to plane so their wx subscription goes where they go?

Re: What's the point of this?

They probably just wanted a GPS next to their GPS, so they can navigate while they navigate.

Re: What's the point of this?

Maybe they like to have their ground track for every flight. You can load them into google earth and get an actual ground track shown for all your flights.

Re: What's the point of this?

For whatever reason they could have user specific waypoints loaded in the 496...?

Re: What's the point of this?

Here is another example: http://www.controller.com/listingsde...0L/1186003.htm
I would never have 3 portables with a panel mounted gps, but I would have at least one.

This one made me laugh. I actually think this would be a hazard to safe flight. The pilot is going to spend more time configuring all the gps and looking at the screen then just flying the damn airplane. Then again I prefer to go fly a cub with basic instruments so maybe its just my point of view.

Re: What's the point of this?

I thought having one and a half GPSes (one IFR-certified, and one "emergency VFR unit, whatever that means") was enough...

Re: What's the point of this?

One of my clients uses a GPS just like this one in addition to his IFR approved Garmin 430, and always has it mounted on the yoke like in the picture. He says it's a backup "if all else goes to hell". I think it's just distracting and it clutters the cockpit.

Re: What's the point of this?

Sadly I've seen a guy come into our FBO many times with a brand new G1000 182 with dual 496 on the yokes (one on each side). I might be wrong though...one may be a 396

Re: What's the point of this?

I don't have a pic but I have the Avidyne PFD/MFD+2 430s and still have my iPAQ mounted for WX. I used it outside that aircraft and have had it longer then that aircraft. Now I have the iPAD. This could get interesting.
